North DeKalb Mall Plans - 2008/06/20 02:13 North DeKalb Mall is close to bringing in Costco.
In May '08 there was a meeting at Shamrock to share plans for the "struggling mall". The Costco deal has been agreed to in principle by both parties; Hendon Properties and Costco but is dependent on some rezoning. The Costco will be located in the area between the AMC Theatres and Burlington Coat Factory, displacing the enclosed court on that end of the mall. Costco plans to have a gas station near N. Druid Hills Rd, which requires rezoning of some property owned by Hendon.
Two alternative designs are under consideration. One will retain the closed mall concept. The other, called the "de-mall" plan, will open up the mall, creating a market street environment (which is in vogue these days). The de-mall plan will include a total of 730.5K sq. ft. of floor space. Assuming the deal goes through, construction will begin in Summer 2009 (possibly a quarter earlier) and Costco will open Summer 2010 (possibly a quarter later).
Costco will more than likely offer the pull needed to
attract other merchants and in turn bring in more shoppers. In the traditional covered-mall plan, Costco would be in the area currently occupied primarily by the food court area (with a smaller food court being near the AMC Theatres). Regardless of which overall mall plan Hendon goes with, the Costco store will be 152K square feet total, with 143K sq. ft. in the main building. http://airbornecombatengineer.typepad.com/in_decatur/

Re:North DeKalb Mall Plans - 2008/06/20 12:23 I can't believe the plans for the mall. I remember when that was a happening mall. I still remember eating in the Magnolia Room , upstairs in Richs. I even had my 11 yr old B-day party there. My hi school boyfriend, Alex Dryden and I used to take his grandmother there for lunch a lot of Saturdays. That was the after school work place for many dragons. I think I worked in 4 different there.

Re:North DeKalb Mall Plans - 2008/06/20 15:06 Pam,
Alex Dryden lived in my neighborhood around the corner and about 2 houses down. His family may still live there. Yes, North DeKalb was the closest mall to us for years and the place to go after school and for some during school as well! Ask my youngest brother! He got caught by our mom and she marched him right back to school! He thought he was cool til mom walked him to the office!
