I have to tell you guys about a different side of Coach Harris. My "friends " decided it would be a hoot to lace my OJ with acid one day. How much? I will never know for sure, but my last coherent memory , is of them laughing and then passing my OJ back to me.
Well, I found a rock somewhere that day. I was convinced this rock could talk. I could see faces and shapes in this talking rock, so it must be real.
For three days , as best I could tell, I got up went to school, and sat outside with my rock. Teachers sat with me and kept asking about what I had taken. I kept insisting I did not take any acid. I had tried it in the past and HATED the stuff. Always gave me a bad trip. I guess that was why my friends thought it was so funny.
Mainly, Coach Harris babysat me. Other teachers took turns, but I remember him mostly. Just kindly sitting there, waiting for me to come down, and ( no joke, talking with me and my rock)
No cops, no parents, no whacks.

Coach Harris was truly one of the most influential men in my life. When I was a junior, Student Senate wanted to give him a gift, and were so naive that we didn't realize he could not accept it. He thanked us profusely, then explained in the most gentle way that he sincerely appreciated the thought, but that he could not accept the gift from us. We were disappointed, but the lesson he taught us about humility and integrity was one we will probably all remember. I still think of him when I think of people with integrity.

No, no proof, and I was not able to piece together exactly what had occurred till quite a bit later.
I transferred to Kittridge Adult, to finish out 12th grade very soon afterwards.

I never got whacked by Coach Harris, but he wrote letters to colleges to help me get in school. He was a great and generous man

Andie, Coach Harris was an awesome man. I grew up with his kids... played ball in their front yard many times. On one or two occasions, he came out and played football with us. Very neat man. Another of those giants that God put in my path. I just didn't want to be in the path of his board of education!

Hang on a minute... somehow I missed this little retort.
Just exactly what were you laughing at?
Was it that I finally grew up, or was it that I was too mature to do the childish things.

Skygoddess! That's an incredible story -- on the one hand, a wonderful testimony for Coach Harris, showing tremendous common sense that I can't imagine being used much in these "Zero Tolerant" days...on the other, with friends like those...
So I wondered if it was just a coincidence that you left Shamrock, or did it play a part in your decision (to like, split, in 70s jargon...)?
I think you were on to something with the rock. I've got a couple of viewing stones I'd love to show you...have you heard of Japanese Suiseki? People pay big money for viewing stones! The US National Arboretum in DC has a large collection pictured in a book called "Awakening the Soul" -- viewing stones can be used to calm the mind, which you surely needed!
So here's a little on the "Power of the Stone":
"A stone's power of suggestion is an essential quality for all styles and forms of viewing stones. A viewing stone has been defined as "possessing a character that leads the viewer, in contemplating it, to imagine a scene of undisturbed grandeur and to enter a poetic world of solitude and tranquility."
It is the totality of the stone -- large or small and how it is displayed -- that provides this level of suggestiveness. Certainly the viewer's awareness, past experience, mood and emotion affect his or her depth of contemplation.
..."Probably the most important factor, aside from a stone's intrinsic beauty, is the sense of immortality its permanence conveys. Changeable in its effect, yet unchangeable in essence. The same stone under a hot sun is a different stone in the moonlight, or wet with rain. What you see in a stone is not what I see. This is the beauty of sui-seki."
Pretty heavy, huh? I guess it just goes to show that drug induced experiences can truly expand the mind. But to put it in your OJ at school...your mind could have expanded beyond it's own boundaries, for sure. They could have hauled you off to jail, or worse.
Here's another quote: "A sui-seki should evoke memories of the day you found it, the difficulty of the search, the heat, or the cold, even the mood that possessed you at the time." ...To paraphrase...the stone brought home is something to remember to day by.
See? (There's some sort of message here -- you figure it out!) Did you save the rock? You sure remembered the day...

Susie, you can't mean it! Corporal punishment has always been a "touchy" subject, but...Porter asked you to drop 'em, and then called your mother for being "insubordinate"? Or maybe standing up for what's right? What about sexual harrassment? What about child sexual abuse? In today's world, your mother wouldn't spank you -- she'd be too busy calling the papers and finding a lawyer. By the way, Lee, Porter probably got a bigger charge out of spanking the girls, don't cha know?

Gail, OK, I left out a couple of the more embarrassing details about my "rock"
Like the fact my "friends" messed with my head by playing along and claiming to see the faces too.
Also, one small detail, about my conclusion that this rock was, obviously some sort of alien.
Funny thing was, I really did get attached to that damm rock. If only , I had thought to name it a pet rock, Who knows where I would be today!
I remember it being very hard to throw it away.
And yes , to your question, I really did not want to be known as "Alien Girl" so I split.
