A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/04 14:21 I talked to my bro Steve today and he told me the following story. He got a ticket for parking in his own driveway! I thought I'd heard him wrong. The City of Lawrenceville sure enough did give him a ticket. In addition to his cement driveway he also has a gravel one to the left. He's had that there for years to accommodate his and his daughters' vehicles. Steve said he believes that Gwnt. Co. also has a law about that. However, he didn't know that beforehand. If the police come back in a week and he's not parking on it then the ticket will be withdrawn and he won't have to pay. The people across the street from him also have a gravel one as well. This struck me the wrong way; not even allowed to park on your own property w/o Big Brother there to tell you not to.

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/04 17:50 A Shamrock teacher once told me " the easiest way to get a law changed, is to break it, then go to court and fight it"

That came from the infamous Coach Sutherland,
unfortunately in my case, it never worked out!

Perhaps, Steve needs to get his facts together, get his neighbor's together and take this thing to court.Oh, and get Bob Grigg's in on it too, he knows "people"
If that doesn't work Uncle Guido will be back in town early next week, Call Ida!

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/04 20:34 The City of Lawrenceville is a law unto its own, is it not? City Ordinances? Could be all sorts of extra revenue generation built into those babies...

What I do know, is that if we were to build our house here in Dacula on RA-200 zoning today (it was built in '78), that we'd be required to have covered parking -- none of that tacky "cars in the driveway" kinda stuff. This is a NICE neighborhood now.

I know that a lot of restricted neighborhoods go the whole mile, and include no street parking. Then, they give you a driveway that is long enough to park one car. Go figure!

Tell him to holler "GRANDFATHER!"! It works for pigs out here.

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/04 23:01 A friend of mine ran into the same thing while we were still in school. They told him his car had to be parked on asphalt.
He went down to Home Depot and purchased 4 bags of "asphalt repair",, poured it out so it would be under his tires, then patted it down flat. He beat it in court because the law only said the car had to be on "asphalt".
I have two trailers parked on cement slab stepping stones that measure about 14' X 14'. They have never said anything to me. I keep the grass cut around them so they look neat.
Sounds like the law is still after the easy buck. Wonder how many homes in the area were robbed while this public servant was out chasing parked cars?

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/04 23:07 Face it Laurie,, they are out for the fast buck with little out put.
Tell Steve to read the post I added below. It's what a friend of ours did back in the day. He lived off Idelwood Road,, can't remember his name,, Steve might. He drove a black 65 Chevy like I had.

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/05 00:16 You REALLY cannot win this fight.

You cannot fight city hall.

It's called sovereign immunity and that's just plain frightening.

Duke, sorry but I don't see "the post you added below". Am I missing something? Did you mean above? I've been thinking of names of people that lived off Idlewood Rd. Are you talking about Butch Gunter, Kurt Munsey, David Lovelace or Robbie Padgett? What class was the driver of the 65 Chevy in? Do you remember? Kurt for sure and I believe Robbie lived in Drayton Woods off Idlewood. David and Butch lived closer down near Ponce in the same neighborhood also off Idlewood. When I knew Kurt (in the late 70's) he drove a yellow Gran Torino.

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/05 04:26 when steve and i moved into the current "Pappas Ranch" he was cited for havin some furniture on the carport that we hadnt made room for inside the house and was told they would come by again,if it was gone they would overlook the citation, and we had a years "Probation" meaning that if they cited us again in the next year it would stick.
I personally think that they are reaching for straws with citations like this.Revenue generation comes to mind.
one day i caught the Code Enforcement fellow sitting in our street eating his lunch and i asked him if he was here for us.He stated that he saw no violations in our yard.and he cordially excused hisself and moved down the road. All i could think was "i wonder if he is in violation by sitting still , and what were the policies on them parking in front of our house for lunch."
But i digress-the fashion police - as i call them-needs to justify their being in existance and its usually the working class that foots his bill.
I dont think they can be fought in court, unless the court has uncut grass in the yard, and they are out of reach for the common man.

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/05 21:55 If you were coming from Ponce on Idlewood, I think it was the first subdivision on the left. The entrance was about 1/4 mile from the school. He would had graduated in 74 probably. Short guy with sandy hair. The only things in life that are free,,

That subdivision is Idlewood Acres. It would not have been Robbie Padgett, he was in class of 79 with me.

My subdivision out here in the boonies has Rules and Regulations saying we can't park cars on the road for more than 2 hours at a time. It is a very nice neighborhood but no one enforces the rules around here! Temple only has 4 officers plus the chief so could be why! haha All houses in the neighborhood have at minimum 2 car garages and most use them. You can not park a vehicle in the driveway with a cover on it but you can park as many cars as will fit. No trailers, RVs, boats, etc can be visible from the road and we have a lake in our subdivision. For the most part, everyone respects the neighborhood and complies. No vehicles on grass either.

How can they enforce this rule for Steve and not his neighbor that is a police officer???? I KNOW, I KNOW...double standards! I would have Steve take a picture of the officer's house/drive when a vehicle is parked on the gravel lot and take it to court with him. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse but how are we suppose to keep up with all the NEW or CHANGED laws, etc. especially at the local level unless our governments spend a little of their (OUR) money to do a mail out to all residence to let us know???

As Julie Brashler would say: "I'm just saying".

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/06 03:01 Yes Idlewood Acres it is! Heaven forbid a police officer living across from Steve although one is not needed! His neighbor with the gravel lot isn't in law enforcement! And did you know that Robbie Padgett is an M.D.? Hard to believe. I knew him way back when and never imagined he'd become one. He's on this site but haven't seen him online in a while although we've sent msgs back and forth.

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/06 11:47 Laurie! Ya'll crack me up...

I graduated in '74 -- that means all those guys were the same age as me...and those guys my age always seemed to be lacking something...testosterone, maybe? Or just Izod sweaters?

Anyway -- you are asking the WRONG girl! Ask me what the guys in the Class of '70, '71, '72 were driving...now that's another story!

I see you were looking at their cars, while I was checking out the Izods, Farrah slacks and all that hot jock apparel! By the time the guys in the Class of '74 were old enough to drive, most of them had revealed themselves to be waaaay less cool than the guys ahead of them!

I think if you wanna know who drove a hot car, ask the guys!

Re:A Fight I Cant Win - 2009/04/06 12:02 It might had been Brian Johnson but I'm not sure. I know his house backed up to Lake Tahoe Apartments cause he use to come thru his backyard to the swimming pool when he saw me over there.

Speaking of police officers,, Louis Athis is a cop in Norcross !! HA !!

Of anyone I knew in school,, he's the last I would had thought to ever be a cop. At least he knows what it's like to be on the other side of the law,, like the rest of us.

I just talked with Paul Williams a month ago. He's doing well.
