SKIPPING ???? US ?? - 2009/04/07 14:54 I got a call from the Principle from my son's school a few years back. He needed me to come see him because my son had been caught skipping.
I dropped what I was doing, changed clothes and drove to the school, which was 6 miles away.

Upon arrival, he told me of this horrific occurrence.
My son had been caught in the weight room working out. He was going to be given detention for 3 days.

I asked where he was suppose to be. He responded that he had algebra at the time in question. I asked my son about this, he said he was finished with his work and asked the teacher about going to the weight room and she said it would be fine. On the way to the weight room, he encountered his wrestling coach. He asked hiss coach if it would be ok to be in the weight room and was given an ok.
I asked the Principle what part of this was "skipping". He told me the students were suppose to be in class, and if they were not, it was "skipping".

I had to explain the term "skipping",,,,

Hanging out on the side of Stone Mountain,, drinking Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill !......

Or maybe we were down to the Zesto's in Decatur enjoying a daily special....

Or maybe we were over at Lakeside, or Briarcliff giving their football team a hard time.....

Or maybe we were at Stone Mountain up behind the little train town swimming in that lake ....

We could had even been over at Northlake Mall in the pet store feeding the Parana goldfish...

WHO KNOWS !! What were you other folks doing,, instead of being in school ?

I told that Principle that if there was any detention to be served,, that I would be there,, not my son. He let me off with a warning !! That never worked on me !

Re:SKIPPING ???? US ?? - 2009/04/07 16:20 Call me old fashioned but are you suppose to use the 'buddy system' when working out? Maybe that's why he was in trouble. **more cowbell**

Re:SKIPPING ???? US ?? - 2009/04/07 17:30 But wait, should the teacher not have known he would be in trouble for "skipping" if he was allowed to leave his assigned class? And same for the coach? Sounds like the principal just needs to feel his "authority".

He should be proud your son was in the school and not out somewhere else!

Re:SKIPPING ???? US ?? - 2009/04/07 18:44 Well I remember a day when a few of us checked ourselves out, and spent the day at various houses. Decided for some unknown reason to go to the elementary school and as we were walking to the school one of Dekalb County's finest (Officer Smith) picked us up and took us back to Shamrock. Coach Harris suspended us all and told Officer Smith to take us directly to Juevenile (spelled incorrectly I'm sure - should have not skipped that day). But Officer Smith was kind enough to ask us where we wanted to go and dropped us off at North Dekalb Mall. I refuse to divulge names to protect the innocent . You know who you are. And Office Smith turned out to be a pretty cool cop. He officiated some of the dances.

Re:SKIPPING ???? US ?? - 2009/04/07 23:08 I have always been proud of my sons. I did tell the principle my feelings on the subject,, he never called me after that. I hope I didn't hurt his feelings. The man reminded me of Mr Dimbo. Remember how he came into Shamrock and was going to clean it up,,,,NOT!! The only things in life that are free,,

Re:SKIPPING ???? US ?? - 2009/04/08 11:42 My sister doesn't like to talk about these things anymore -- because her kids might hear! -- but once upon a time her and a group of girls were run down by the DeKalb police helicopter while skipping school... I think there was some rawhiding in the mix...and I think they might have ended up at Juvie, but it's been a while...

And I'll bet there's a few more of ya'll out there with the same memories...

Me, I was a good girl -- I never got caught.

Re:SKIPPING ???? US ?? - 2009/04/08 13:31 Well, I skipped but I always needed a ride. Many a time I left the parking lot in an unmanned vehicle as we were all crouched down in the car so no teachers could see who was leaving. When I became an upper classman we would just wave at the coaches as we left. Mrs. McMahon would even ask us to bring her back a burger!

I distinctively remember leaving campus with LuAnne Chandler the day after she got her Driver's License. She was hanging a left off N. Druid Hills between the Firestation and the Shamrock Plaza and was broadsided. It was our fault. We were scared and left the scene of the accident. We spent the morning running around trying to figure out what to do next.

We eventually made it back to campus where Dakalb County's finest were waiting for us. Freaked me out! Classes were changing so way too many people witnessed us getting in the back of the squad car. My parents never found out nor did I get in trouble at school

Re:SKIPPING ???? US ?? - 2009/04/08 13:49 Well well well, If I only knew then what I know now! Had I known that you had a previous run-in with the long arm or the law I never would've gotten in that car with two upperclassmen that fateful spring night. I can only wonder how my life would've turned out had I not cavorted with a fugitive!!! "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin"
