Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/26 15:43 I don't mean to sound negative.... but I am going to be. Am I the only one that HATED school? Did anyone on this site go to SHS in the same universe I did?
The things I remember most about Shamrock......were the drugs, skipping classes, the drugs, skipping classes, the drugs, and oh yea, skipping classes. But most of all it was the drugs....... that was my whole reason for getting up and going to school in the morning.

I also remember that everyone seemed to be in a "group", there were the freaks, the skaters, the jocks, and so on, and from what I saw there wasn't a whole lot of association between them......

Anyway, I'm really not trying to be a downer, just curious if my memories are really as screwed up as they seem to be....

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/26 16:05 Not trying to be a smart aleck here, but maybe it was the DRUGS??? LOL! There were parts of school that I liked, and parts that I disliked.

You're right, there were "cliques," and I am proud to say that I don't think I actually belonged to any ONE group. Sure, I was a cheerleader, but I didn't think of myself as popular. I liked a few of the cheerleaders, but there were some that I didn't care for at all because I thought they were snobs. I hung out with all kinds of different people: nerds, geeks, braniacs, jocks, artists, freaks...

For the most part I enjoyed attending SHS. I just wish I had tried harder with my school work. (Oh lawdy! When did I get sooooo old!)

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/26 16:05 welcome to my world.i made it to testing and little else,i wont name names but there were a few teachers that passed me soley because i could connect them with ...ummm.....supplies. i should have failed most of my classes cause i dont think i really attended it as much as was required altho my record may not reflect that.i was finally told by the assistant principal ...Mr Kuzmarski " Mr. Pappas, High school isnt for everyone.and maybe you would be better served by not coming back" so i quit and joined the navy in my 11th year.

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/26 16:21 In 9th grade when I arrived on the Clarkston H.S. scene it was mid-year. I had no one. The only girl I knew was my dad's boss's daughter. She lived on Canadian Way (Beverly Little). I hated the fact that I had to wear corrective shoes and kids made fun of me. I'd get a pair of "normal" shoes and hide them down by our basement door and change them back there before I got on the bus. It's funny now but not back then.
Yes there were cliques around for me as well. Some girls had the best clothes and latest everything. (The real John Romaine handbags.) Their hair was perfect and makeup too.
In the early grades I basically just had one friend. By the 11th grade I knew many dragons in all the other classes and did things with them too. (movies, camping, sleepovers, shopping). My senior year I had one main group of friends but I was still friends with others if they'd have me lol! No, really I liked knowing a lot of folks. So the friends meant a lot to me and when I see them on this site it's great.
I hated oral reports, algebra and French. The other classes were ok. I only skipped one time and that was the last week of my junior year. I was late to a few classes (usually art my senior year!)

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/26 16:23 Like Susie, I had some great times and some not-so-great times. There were, of course, cliques - I don't think that'll ever change. Again, like Susie, I had friends who were 'popular' and friends who were 'nerds' and friends who were 'potheads.' It's a part of my life I wouldn't have missed for the world, but neither would I want to repeat it.
I think the most shocking thing in my high school career was hearing the rumor that I had a secret child tucked away somewhere. LOL - at that point I was still un-kissed, even! Imagine my surprise at hearing I'd had a baby. Yup, not all sunshine and roses, but time and distance (and drugs, I hear) have a way of softening memories. Wanna borrow my rose-colored glasses?

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/26 17:45 There were cliques in high school? Wow, I didn't know that! As far as I recall our class ('78) were all pretty much friends all along. Thre were some who were a little wierd and crazy, but we all were pretty much friends. (or was it really just one large "clique?"

As far as the school part goes, I enjoyed Coach Sutherland's classes, Ms. May's classes and Miss Rogers too, but other than that, my school record, the stories posted here, etc... will tell you, I enjoyed the occasional amount of misbehavior as well !

WOW! Another mystery baby story! The rumor I heard about myself was that a certain somebody (who shall remain nameless but knows who he is) "got lucky" with me on the bus ride back from a basketball game. As I recall, the only time I ever sat with this joker, we sat right behind the driver and next to the Coaches! Apparently I ended up preggers and went all the way to Paris, France for a "medical procedure!" Funny thing is, at the time, I had never even been kissed either! Hahahaha! Amazing the garbage that goes around! I DID go to Paris, but I can assure you, there was no medical procedure!!

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/27 07:47 Glad to hear that the drugs weren't the source of the few memories I do have.....I know that there was a LOT of negative things brought on by my drug use back then, but honestly.... I wouldn't change a thing. Through a lot of stupidity as a teenager, I ended up meeting and marrying my wife of 33 years, and had 2 great kids, all of which would never have happened if I had not made the mistakes that I made.
As for the cliques, I don't remember them getting along all that well.... yes there were exceptions, but I remember two "jocks" getting me out of Ms. Rippys, (anyone remember her?) math class, ( I think it was math), and beating the crap out of me....but seems like that might have beena sub-freshman thing.... who knows....

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/27 14:01 I remember the few that wore the tassel shoes and the Izod shirts that thought they were better than most. I remember some of them getting busted for drugs too.

The few I hung with were desperately anti drug. We had seen what it did to some of the older siblings in the family. We chose the other road and I'm glad of it.

I think most of the folks that attended Shamrock had a good experience. I do remember a few that were picked on constantly. I felt sorry for some of them.

I do remember Ms. Jolly and Ms. Rippy. I hear Ms. Jolly comes to some of the gatherings. Anyone know what happen to Ms. Rippy? She was a cool teach and let us get away with all of out antics, as most of the teachers did.

I agree with the rest of ya,, I thought it was awful at the time. Looking back however, it was huge fun and I made some lifelong friends.

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/27 14:45 When I call Gail Jolly about the lunch and reunion I'll ask her if she knows where Ms. Rippy is. I'll be calling her soon.

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/27 16:34 I remember the cliques as well. I did not know where I fit in, I mostly thought that I did not. I hated school and at a very young age had made up my mind to get out asap. That was a mistake. There is no going back. I guess that I was never taught how to apply myself. I do remember that first grade for me was a night mare and how the teacher treated the children who had attended kindergarten special. They knew songs and would sing them and the rest of us just stood there. When you are not included, then you either act out or give up.

Re:Alternate Universe??? - 2009/05/27 19:20 OK, Being the son of a teacher put me in a position I neither chose nor instigated. Freaks had it in for me, Jocks, well I did try out for 3 out of 4 sports but did not like it all that much, did not trouble me at all. The Freaks were just out for revenge.

Tommy Jacobs was the only one who would speak to me civil. "Whats up MBS" (Mr.Bird's Son) He had my dad for a class and he must've had a good student teacher relationship with him.

My Dad did not take crap from anyone. Patrolling The boys room for smokers, busting anyone whom he saw doing wrong and keeping his students ATTENTIVE in his class.Lots of things thrown, dropped and banged on desks in there.I had a few friends but pretty much flew under the radar thru high school.

I will say miss Rippy had a thing for some of her male students. i.e. Allie Cone. And she would sit behind me in math class and play with my hair .

Nuff Said!!
