Coach Ramos - A Message From the Ramos Family - 2009/07/15 17:42
I would like to thank everyone in the online community and all the Shamrock alumni that have expressed their love of my father and their concern about his recent illness. Your words of comfort and encouragement have been a blessing to our family.
On Monday, July 6, my father was admitted to Emory Hospital after suffering a massive stroke. The impact of the stroke resulted in the loss of his ability to speak, the use of his right arm and leg, and the ability to swallow or receive oral nutrition or hydration. His recovery the first week was slow, he has been able to recognize everyone that has come to visit, and his strength continues to improve.
On Monday, July 13, he was stable enough to return home for in-home care provided by Crossroads Hospice. He has in the last day begun to eat solid foods and drink liquids, and is in good spirits. We are encouraged by his daily progress and will continue to work towards a speedy recovery.
As many of you know, my father’s life has been filled with many blessings in his professional life as an educator, in his competitive life as an athlete and coach, and in his personal life as a husband, father, and friend:
He married the love of his life and enjoyed forty-nine passionate years of marriage. He has raised three sons to manhood and is unflinchingly proud of us all. He has been blessed with the birth of six grandchildren and has lived to see them flourish and grow to adulthood. He has influenced the lives of thousands of young people as a coach and educator and inspired them to become productive members of society, community servants, and genuinely good people. He is admired and respected by his peers for his professionalism, and his commitment to treating all students with equality and dignity. He is a man of faith, respect, and integrity. His personal achievements are measured in the life he has lived and the many young people he has inspired to be their best.
At this time he is resting comfortably surrounded by family and able to receive friends for short visits. I appreciate the many offers of assistance and thank you for your kind words of support. Please keep my father in your prayers and honor his legacy of patriotism, fair play, and community service in your own personal way.
Best regards,
Mike (77), Cookie (78) and Rocky (80)

What a great man. He has had an impact on so many lives. I remember every time I would see him running/walking around his neighborhood I would stop and chat with him for a minute. he was always so positive with his words. He always had something good to say to me. He always called me "Humphries" I don't think he ever remembered my first name. But that was cool. I live about a mile and a half away from his house. I plan on seeing him this weekend if the family says it is OK. He is so strong willed. I really think he will beat this for the time being and I will chat with him again on the sidewalk soon.
Mike,Cookie, and Rocky HANG IN THERE--And if you dont mind...Ill see you this weekend.

Inches make champions. -- Vince Lombardi What's the difference between success and failure? Ideal conditions? Half again as much effort? Twice the talent? Ten times "the breaks"? Or is it simply that some people have what it takes and some people don't? Vince Lombardi, the football coach who brought the Green Bay Packers from fifteen losing seasons to successive world championships, thought success was a matter of inches. A bit more concentration, one extra push in practice, a consistent second effort for a tiny additional gain. He didn't ask his players to be something other than they were - he asked them to improve their best an inch at a time. He knew inches add up, in life as in sports.
In life as in football, it is often the little things that count - inches make the difference. An excerpt from the book, Days of Healing, Days of Joy by Earnie Larsen and Carol Larsen Hegarty
Coach embodies this principle. Thank God for the grace, heart, and blessings he shows which allows him to make such a turnaround, inches at a time!

God's mercy. Time for many to see him and say goodbye, and now he is with his beloved. He will be missed, but the memories live on. A life well lived!
