Atlanta penitentiary field trip - 2010/04/15 08:17 This only applies to those of us who went to Rehoboth Elementary - does anybody remember the field trip to the Atlanta Federal Pen?? Around 1967?? This was probably the first and last field trip there. It was a nightmare!!! Or did I dream it?

Re:Atlanta penitentiary field trip - 2010/04/15 09:25 Jeanie, I think you might have dreamed that!

Since I was in your class, and even had perfect attendance in the 7th grade, I can't imagine missing that one. What kind of field trip was that? Seems an odd thing to do to a bunch of pre/pubescent kids.

I remember the trip to Mathis Dairy, the zoo, McDonald's (I think that was Girl Scouts), and the Gulf station next door. I think if I had been to the Federal Pen it would have stood out on that list.

I remember going with the Pattons when their mother went to Confederate Avenue to get her driver's license. I'm happy to say that between that trip and the Zoo, that's the closest I ever got to prison.

Later, in high school, we got to visit the county incinerator. That was memorable, also.

Hey Jeanie -- just think if we had just run into each other at Piccadilly Farms in Bishop last fall -- without reuniting first. Small world -- I'd have recognized you for sure!

Re:Atlanta penitentiary field trip - 2010/04/15 16:19 Thanks for bringing all this good stuff back Gail.....We never went to the state pen but does anybody out there from my class remember going to the Governor's mansion, the state capital and the Coke factory downtown? The cool thing was that at the Gov. Man. we ran into Ms Lillian and Amy and Amy wanted us to come in and play with her then when we got to the Capital, Jimmy Carter came out and shook our hands! I still have his autographed picture in a frame.
There was somewhere else we went that I can't remember....does anyone else know where it was?

Re:Atlanta penitentiary field trip - 2010/04/16 10:30 Hey, I remember the GM plant, and Fernbank, too. Personally, I thought the absolutely best thing about field trips was getting on the bus. Didn't make much diff to me where we went, just get me outta there!

I guess we did walk to the Gulf station, though. That's where I learned what a carbureator was. But have I learned how to spell it yet?

I always thought it was great just to get to go outside and sit on the lawn and have class on a sunny day...

And hey -- thinking of the Gulf station makes me think of the paper drives -- remember how those stacks would grow out front, each with a little sign for the grades? I loved doing the newspaper drive thing -- asking folks to donate junk was a lot easier than selling Girl Scout cookies.
