Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/08/08 03:04 I've just received an email from a teacher at Shamrock Middle School that grad in 1972. Shamrock Middle wants to change the name yet again, and to Druid Hills Middle School. You can send your feelings pro or con about this to decatur.gordons@yahoo.com. The msg will go to Lisa Gordon. Some parents now don't like the idea of sending their children to the school with the "Shamrock" name. Times have changed, I know, but the name Shamrock is in itself part of the history of our school. The times and the students make it what it is today, not the name. Again, you can send your ideas/feelings regarding this to Lisa Gordon. Her email address is:
decaturgordons@yahoo.com.
Thanks.

Re:Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/08/08 09:57 Wow! That is amazing! I just sent MY opinion (imagine that) to the email address you provided!

From Shamrock to Druid Hills because people don't want their kids to go to a school called Shamrock??? I wonder if these same people know that the Druids were a people known for their sorcery and their anti-christian beliefs as well as for human sacrifice.

I'm just sayin'...

Thanks for the info Laurie!

Long live SHAMROCK!!!!

Re:Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/08/08 10:19 OOOPS! Laurie, that email address did not work. It was returned to my email as "undeliverable because this user doesn't have a yahoo.com account."

Is there a DIFFERENT address we can send our opinions to?

Re:Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/08/08 12:34 In light of the school district’s budget deficit issues, should the district be spending thousands of dollars to change the school’s name?
Is this a necessary expense to make the combination of students and teachers feel more comfortable next year? Or is this a bad decision on the part of the school board that should be overturned considering the recent layoff notices to numerous kitchen staff and other district employees?

Re:Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/08/08 23:32 As Shamrock High School is no longer, I don't really feel I have a dog in this fight. However, I am interested in the reasoning behind the issue. Was the name Shamrock associated with very bad events of some kind after I was gone and oblivious of life there? Or is it just to help link the school with Druid Hills High? If so, it really does seem like something that no one can afford time or resources to deal with for the next couple of years...

Sorry to be so ignorant, but I don't know why the request is on the table?

Re:Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/08/13 22:59 I've been out of Shamrock for 32 years now. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about high school. I've always liked saying the name "Shamrock" when someone has asked me where I went to high School. Good times.

Re:Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/08/14 00:55 (Just connecting this to the original thread!)

ROBERT THORPE WROTE:

Hello Shamrock Alumni! My name is Robert Thorpe and I'm the current principal at the Shamrock Middle School. As many of you are aware, a proposal has been presented to change the name of the school from Shamrock MS to Druid Hills MS. At the very outset of this proposal, I have been adamant that the voice of the alumni should be heard before any final decision is made. I feel very proud to be a part of the Dragon Nation! The physical plant of the school is scheduled to undergo a $2.1 million dollar renovation soon that will transform the high school building to conform with the state's middle school standards. The name change proposal was brought forward by a representative of our PTSA. The intent of the proposal is to establish a seemless connection with the feeder high school (Druid Hills) since we are the single feeder middle school to Druid Hills. Many of the instructional programs are already articulated at both schools, i.e. both schools are part of the International Baccalaureate World School's network that is recognized all over the world. Part of the effort of the name change movement is to bring SHS memories back to life and honor the high school years in a more formal way. We are currently developing a survey for all alumni, former staff, teachers and administrators to take to express their opinions. We want to hear from you. Please look forward for that soon.

Mr. Thorpe, I met you last October when Shamrock High had a reunion. You opened the school to Dragons that first walked it's halls. We enjoyed being in Shamrock again. It basically has stayed the same and being there made me feel like a teenager again!
There are many of us I know, that will be glad to share our thoughts on the school's name change. Thanks for giving us the opportunity. I was one of many that were in the first graduating class of SHS that have been there since the school opened its doors. Regardless of the name change, it will always be Shamrock to me.
Thanks,
Laurie Early

Re:Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/09/13 01:51 I may be a little late on this but I would like to see it remain Shamrock! I agree with Mark Brown...I AM PROUD to say I went to Shamrock! I also agree with Doug....come on....spend the money wisely and not on changing a name!

I would be extremely mad if I were one of those who has been laid off from position at or involving the school, if I were a teacher who had been required to take days off without pay. What a wasted thought on changing the name of a school when people are struggling to make ends meet anyway and then you force them to take days off without pay! Doesn't make sense to me at all!

Re:Shamrock Middle name change - 2010/10/19 10:35 The PTSA has that much clout to put forth to the school board about a name change. WOW. As for the money spent to physically change the name on the building. Don't worry they probably budgeted for that in the renovation.

I had to laugh at the "needed to bring the building up to middle school standards". Does it really cost that much to lower the urinals and drinking fountains? LOL

Instead of one plaque showing this was Shamrock High School. Now a second one will be needed to say this used to be Shamrock Middle School.

I better stop or I'll get political and Susie will delete my rant.

Love ya Susie!
