Avondale HS & Medlock Elem Closed - 2011/04/27 08:39 This is sort of old news -- I think it happened a few months back, but I thought I'd let everyone near and far know that Medlock Elementary and Avondale High School have closed.

It's really a shame about Medlock E, because that neighborhood is so vibrant, full of professional folks. The homes around Medlock are small, and the yards don't lend to expansion, but the proximity to Emory has meant that the homes and yards are well kept and the streets are full of people pushing baby carriages and walking dogs.

I don't think the school had changed much since it was built, but kids could still walk to school. I don't know where those kids will go now, but I imagine it will change the value of real estate in the neighborhood somewhat.

As for Avondale High School, well I'll try to be kind.

Avondale and Briarcliff were built around the same time, and I think the school has really taken a beating over the years.

OK, after that remark, all I can think of is football games at Avondale High...I, for one, won't miss the place...nuff said!

Re:Avondale HS & Medlock Elem Closed - 2011/04/28 10:02 I agree with your commits ,,

I just get so tired of hearing politicians promise "better education" and "better schools" and instead of keeping the older schools in good condition,, they let them go by the wayside and end up closing them.

The newer schools are wasting so much money it's not funny anymore.
I went to a sporting event at Parkview a few years back.
We had to walk forever from the parking lot to the arena because of the new construction to the school. I was floored as I counted 38 "portable classrooms" around the parking lots.
Turns out, the construction was a new gymnasium, not classrooms or anywhere for instruction, a bigger place for sports.

What's wrong with this picture?

I'm reminded of someone who said once,, "people work hard to provide better for their children. They want a bigger and nicer home than they had as kids and want better schools. Then their kids end up going to school in a house trailer".

Face it folks, kids of this era will not have the chance to walk to school or be in a 25 or 30 child classroom. They will be crammed on a bus and trucked for miles to be crammed into a classroom with 40 or 50 other kids. They don't know each other because they were bussed from miles apart,, not neighborhoods like we had.

I say, keep the older schools in better condition and let kids be taught in smaller classrooms, just like we had at Shamrock,, then they'll have a chance,, just like us !

Re:Avondale HS & Medlock Elem Closed - 2011/05/16 10:45 A few years back my son's highschool played Avondale in football at Avondale. It was Avondale's homecoming and the homecoming queen left the game after halftime holding her baby. I have nothing against letting someone continue their education when they goof-up, but making them an idol is one of the things wrong with our system. Avondale-Clarkston area, keep alert should you have to go there.

Re:Avondale HS & Medlock Elem Closed - 2011/05/17 00:14 I agree Duke! Think about it....not many of our classmates wound up pregnant before graduation and if they did, they had to go to Open Campus. We didn't have our classmates going to jail for stealing, or worse. We all hung out after school because our neighbors were our friends too!

Not saying some things did not go on and no one got in trouble but we spent our time outside hanging out, not behind computer games and texting! We actually communicated verbally with those we had something to say something to!

We all turned out alright and this site is a prime example of how technology is a plus...we have all been awarded the opportunity to come back together because we want to and remember the really good times we all shared! Makes me wonder how many friends our kids or grandkids will have from their childhood 30 years from now.

I do understand that some buildings become too expensive to keep up but in most cases, it would be worth the expense if they would put money toward repairs long before they are too far gone.

The neighborhoods around Medlock may not have enough kids elementary age to keep it open right now as Gail speaks of young families and baby carriages, but in 5 years, that will most likely change. Take the time to update the school now so that it is ready to reopen when needed!

What is the county and state thinking when a gym is more important than classrooms? I just don't understand!
