Calling all Spirit Boosters! - 2007/09/20 21:27 C'mon men. Let's hear from you. If you were like me we were bashed a bit by students and some faculty. What fun Cheerleading camp at Athens the summer of 1973 was. Oh m'goodness did we have fun. Kent Ford and I had an off campus pass and did we raise some uknowwhat. Moose's Bait, Tackle and Bar. 25 cent drafts. Let us know who your cheerleader was. All "stories" will be muy appreciated.

Re:Calling all Spirit Boosters! - 2007/09/21 00:42 Hey Fletch,

I was a cheerleader (graduated in'80) and I never understood why Spirit Boosters were bashed like they were. I mean, they had their hand up the cheerleaders' skirts right out in front of a stadium full of people!

I will never forget the first few times that I practiced with a Spirit Booster. I had to actually allow my Spirit Booster to touch me in "space, the final frontier, a place no man had ever gone before" in order to lift me up for the "chair sit" kick offs! I thought I was gonna die from embarassment! Pretty soon, there were far many other things that just became common practice as a part of the stunts and routines.

You're right, cheerleading camp was a blast every year! We were the only school with guys and there were literally 1000's of girls there, all after the guys! Our Spirit Boosters were the GODS of the camp! And we covered for them when the chaperones were looking for them! Talk about your "happy campers!"

And by the way....I always loved my football players, but weren't they the ones always slapping other GUYS' hineys? (Now I am running and ducking from all the comments that THIS will generate!)

Re:Calling all Spirit Boosters! - 2007/09/21 14:24 Spirit Booster stories...where to begin? I am perversely proud of having been captain of the very LAST squad of Spirit Boosters at Shamrock. There are plenty of good reasons that we were the last squad, and they do make some good stories. Poor Ms. Thompson, after her experience with the class of '80, I guess she decided it just wasn't worth the headaches anymore....

TOP FIVE REASONS SHAMROCK HAD NO SPIRIT BOOSTERS AFTER THE CLASS OF 1980:

1) Camp hijinks - Use of smoke-producing devices and/or substances in the dorm, including (but definitely not limited to) smoke bombs. And then there was the "almost-rumble" in the dorm hall with a squad from Anniston, Alabama - can't remember the details of what started it...something about a megaphone and a white bedsheet...

2) Speaking of "rumbles", there actually were a couple of punches thrown at North DeKalb stadium when a handful of us (foolishly) went up into the stands at halftime to challenge some Chamblee students who'd been heckling us...how stupid was that? Ms. Thompson got down there pretty quickly to break it up before it got too out-of-hand...

3) ...she also responded pretty quickly at another game, when several Spirit Boosters changed clothes at half-time with a few "imposters", who joined us on the track at the start of the third quarter. Considering their inebriated state, it's fortunate that no stunts were attempted - the jig was up when one of them started yelling "Cheer Goddammit" through his megaphone.

4) And speaking of inebriated, we often boosted our own spirits prior to games...and pep rallies, which were always held early in the morning on Fridays. Our core group would meet pre-dawn in the side parking lot of the church next to Laurel Ridge Elementary, and have a pre-pep-rally party; it's a wonder we never got busted for that...

5) Last but not least, if they had decided to continue with Spirit Boosters, they would have had to purchase new megaphones, because most of them were demolished "Who"-style at the end of the last game...which capped off a perfect 0-10 season.

Fun times...

Don't you remember someone paid
you a dollar to hold me upside down
so my panties would show. But you
were a great spirit booster. You
were strong and if you remember we did
stunts some couldn't

Re:Calling all Spirit Boosters! - 2007/09/21 19:20 OMG!!!! I am laughing SO hard about Lyle's stories! I remember a lot of those things...some I do not. I will say this... I was not aware of the pre-pep rally parties! Were the "girls" invited? If so, I obviously was not on the "cool" list! Oh well!

Jackie and Lyle, do y'all remember the night (Fall'78 Football Season) that we all got so tickled during a game and were laughing hysterically (I have no clue what about now)? We were all sitting up on our guy's shoulders getting ready for a kick off. I kept telling my Spirit Booster, Gerald, to put me down because I was laughing so hard that I had to, um....tinkle. He was laughing so hard (at whatever) that he didn't put me down. We were desperately trying to recover from laughing.

Needless to say, I couldn't "contain" myself and ended up soaking Gerald's back! EWWWWWW! Poor Gerald ended up literally SLINGING me down to the ground and I just rolled around on the track laughing and peeing all over myself! Gerald was soooo mad! And I just kept laughing!

Thank goodness that I always had a spare pair of undies and "greenies" with me. Sadly, Gerald did NOT have a spare shirt! OOOOOOOPS!

Ms. Thompson was not real happy THAT night either!

Oh man..I am laughing so hard again....and we all know (especially Gerald) that it is not good for me to laugh TOO hard!

Re:Calling all Spirit Boosters! - 2007/09/22 12:49 Jackie, I never really did that to you, did I? I know Brian Kane was always offering me money to drop you, but I never took him up on it...We were pretty good with the stunts, weren't we? I enjoyed being your partner and getting to know you that year.

And Susie, your story I had forgotten about...but I'm thinking Gerald probably hasn't...

Re:Calling all Spirit Boosters! - 2007/09/22 14:29 Susie, your story certainly places a literal meaning to the figure of speach "P****D OFF"!

Your story was too funny.

For the record, I was considerably more well-behaved during my junior year than in my senior year. Of course, all of my bad behavior was Gerald's fault - he was always a bad influence on me, just ask my parents.

Gerald....

Okay, first of all...EEEEEEEEEWW!!!

And secondly, EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! GROSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

And as far as "thanking" me goes...EWWWWWWWWWW!

Hahahaha! OMG...you have no idea how difficult it was for me to deal with the "Spirit Booster Hands!" After YEARS AND YEARS of INTENSE therapy, I am finally starting to get over it! Hehehe!

The really funny thing is that the (Lakeside) boy that I dated for so many years during and after HS, never understood why HE didn't have the same "priviliges" that you did!

And yes, we ALL say: "If I had only known then...."

Re:Calling all Spirit Boosters! - 2007/09/23 09:16 Lyle, your parents still think I was the bad influence. If they just knew how m uch trouble you got us both into at your dorm at GA Tech!

Susie, the funny thing is I was a skinny like thing back then. Thanks to you weighing about 90lbs I was able to do those things. I should send you all a picture my daughter took 3 months ago. We were packing stuff in the attic for a move from NC to Fla and we found the old spirit booster outfit packed away in a box. My daughter talked me into trying it on and then she took a picture. It was great. If you thought you peed in your pants at that ball game, you really would if you saw this picture of a 45 year old guy in the green and white bell bottom stretch pants!

And BTW...I will have you know that I only weighed 87 pounds the day I graduated from SHS! Don't add three pounds! As you can see from recent pictures of me posted in my profile AND on the site, I am STILL the petite, tiny, little girl that you so easily tossed around back then!

Ouch! I just fell outta my chair from THAT little "stretch of the truth." I am TWICE the woman I used to be! Oh lawdy.....here I go with the hard laughing again! Run!!!!!!
