Who else got whacked by Coach Harris - 2007/10/01 20:15 Yes, I have met with the "Board of Education" many times. The fond memories of the "Hand of Knowledge", as well as, "The Yardstick of Disipline". These fond memories are indelibly seared into my posterior. My first five came to me early in 8th grade (1st wk - SHS had just started as a new school and we were using the lower floors of Clarkston High School). That brief encounter with Coach Harris (as Father Flanigan watched ) left me - well shall we say - "Humbled". Not one with a long memory, I traveled to the Coach's office many times through my years at beloved SHS. I, to this day, still have the souvenir of my last "Board" meeting with the Coach. The Board of Education broke on the third "Whack". Coach Harris was always a fair minded person to me, which is to say I deserved every lick I got. And I got alot... Even Father Flanigan had a soft spot for me when another teacher (Collier) wanted to administer punishment. I protested and Flanigan told him " You better let Charlie hit him ". JNK Class of '72

Re:Who else got whacked by Coach Harris - 2007/10/02 15:02 Ha! I was Ms. Lorraine's favorite target. Don't know why. 1st day of class, bell rings, and she comes in the room, calls me by name, and tells me my desk will be the one beside hers for the entire year!

I can't remember how many times she sent me to get licks!

For some reason I never ended up liking her very much!

Re:Who else got whacked by Coach Harris - 2007/10/02 19:24 Mark - I don't remember Ms. Lorraine...but you were a year behind me, so maybe that's why. I remember Ms. Mays - she was probably the best English Lit teacher I've EVER had.

In relation to Jim's post about Coach Harris' "board" of education...being a GIRL...we didn't have to go bottoms up. But...I did get caught by Coach Harris one day as I was coming back to school after skipping during lunch. I'll never forget it...I was hurrying up the hill - headed for the side entrance when I looked up and there he stood...IN THE DOORWAY! Oops. Of course; I immediately invented this incredible tale of how I had to leave the school grounds...it was a "feminine" issue...he turned FIVE shades of red and mumbled something about planning ahead next time! Whew!!! No punishment!

I wish HS coaches would still blush at the mention of such things...it's a shame... have we lost our innocence or what?

Anyway - Coach Harris, Coach Wells, and just about every teacher/staff member at SHS that I can recall, was dedicated, fair and genuinely concerned with each and every one of us! At least back in the late 60's and early 70's - we were truly blessed! Even those repeat offenders !!!
