Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/08 10:35 Wondering if anyone from the Class of '73 or others can tell me about Hugh Hendrix?

I came to Shamrock in '76 as a junior, and have no background from the area before that. While at UGA, I heard about Hugh being from Shamrock, and that he had been a football player at UGA too, and that one of the Bulldawg football team's internal awards is the Hugh Hendrix memorial award. I've always been curious about his story, and just thought I'd ask those who may have known him best.

Thanks for any insight,

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/08 11:39 I don't remember what he died of, but I believe I still have an old Atlanta Constitution newspaper clipping that explained exactly what he died of. I am at work now and can't get to my annuals. The clipping I believe is stashed inside of one of my annuals at home. As best that I can recall, he had some sort of condition, heart related I believe, that no one was aware of. Just my best guess right now. I will do my best to find the old newspaper clipping and if it is in good enough shape, I could send an attachment to you, via email.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/08 14:19 Byron,

Thanks, I'd appreciate the article.

I'm also interested in just general Hugh Hendrix stories - memories about him from friends and so forth. I hope it doesn't sound creepy to ask, I've just always been curious, and have had the impression that there was certainly something special about him to know.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/08 14:48 I don't think theres any thing creepy about wanting to know about fellow shamrock folks. I was only in 1 class with Hugh. We still had partitioned rooms when I was in my early years at Shamrock. One wing was not completed for a year or two when I was there. Space was limited, so I wound up with a small group of others that had to spend our study hall time in Miss Connell's Latin class. Hugh was in there, taking Latin. It was one crazy cutting up group of folks. We had a lot of laughs and Miss Connell cut us way too much slack. Hugh was kinda quiet and laid back. I remember him being a heck of a football player. But you know that. I remember reading the sports page one day and seeing that he had died, up at UGA. I could hardly believe it. My Dad saw me cutting the story out of the paper and asked me if I knew Hugh. I explained to him that I knew him but never really hung out with him. He was just one of those people you see and know they have a lot of good in them. I remember putting that clipping into my most recent annual and I believe it is probably still there to this day. I could be wrong, but I hope I'm not. I hope folks don't think that was creepy, as I at the time felt it was a way to honor him, as I knew I had no other way to do so. I'll still look for that clipping tonight.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/08 16:25 Honor them... thanks, that's exactly the word I was searching for when I was rambling earlier.

So many young folks on the In Memoriam page, and honoring their memory is important. Classmates know a great deal about each other that perhaps even the families don't know. Hopefully we can all share in honoring them with memories here.

I'm going to put together some of my memories of Mark Winn for another posting. He had one of the most intellectual and creative senses of humor of anyone I ever met.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/08 18:07 Hugh died of cardiac arrest, caused by an acute blood infection. Speculation at the time was that the infection could have been caused by contaminated drinking water. He crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on July 14th. 1976. He was being treated at Emory University Hospital at the time.

Hugh was an offensive guard for UGA. He was expected to be the starting offensive guard during the next season, which would have been his senior year. Vince Dooley was quoted at the time as saying " Hugh was a fine young man in every respect and certainly a good football player."

Hugh was named to the ALL-SEC academic team for 1975.
Captained Shamrock Highs football team.
Lettered in baseball.
Started in the Cotton Bowl.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/08 22:02 He was a Damn good man. He was a few years older than me but I knew him through a friend Clay Blanchard. He lived 2 houses down. The world got a littlel darker that day.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/09 06:56 My last entry here regarding Hugh was just a small amount of the info. that my old newspaper clipping contained. Soon I shall type out the entire article, from start to end. Give me a little time. I need to be in the proper frame of mind and the right time and place.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/09 15:47 Byron and Jay,
Hugh grew up with Charles and me on N. Valley Circle off Druid hills. I remember Charles and I talking to his dad and he telling us that Hugh said and I paraphrase "the only way I am leaving this room is feet first and covered up. Byron you know Charles, they were close friends and Charles went to see him at UGA when they were recruiting him.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/10 20:20 Hi everyone,
I grew up with Hugh...started in first grade together and we went all through grammar and high school together. I will always remember him as a gentle soul, a very quiet unassuming person on the inside...someone who was very passionate about sports. I grew up in Decatur on N. Valley Drive...just around the corner from him and after moving away, heard about his passing and felt one of the really good persons on this earth was taken from us. He was an amazing athlete..very dedicated to his sport.
I graduated from Shamrock in 1973, i have moved away to Massachusetts since but i hold such great memories of my years in the south and the people i went to school with there....

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/11 14:59 Those were well chosen words Lynne.

I am going to type out the July 15th. 1976 Atlanta Constitution article now. I'll try to avoid typos, but no promises. Here goes.

Hugh hendrix, a starting guard on the UGA football team, died Wednesday afternoon at Emory University Hospital of cardiac arrest. He was 21.

The cardiac arrest was apparently caused by an acute blood infection, according to team physician Dr. Marion Hubert. The infection may have been brought on by contaminated drinking water, but the case remained something of a medical mystery.

Hendrix, an Atlanta native had been attending summer school and working out regularly with several other Georgia players in Athens this summer. He came home over the weekend complaining of flu like symptoms, chills and fever.

He was taken to Dekalb General Hospital for tests, then was transferred to Emory Wednesday morning.

A graduate of Shamrock High School, Hendrix was described by coaches and teammates as a quiet, well liked player. He was not flashy on or off the field. He was a hard worker, a B-plus student who rarely made a mental mistake on the gridiron.

"He was a fine young man in every respect and certainly a good football player whom we were counting upon this fall," said coach Vince Dooley. "This is a tragic, shocking thing, and I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to his family."

A 6-foot-four, 230 pound offensive guard, Hendrix was a rising senior whose closest friends on the team included quarterbacks Matt Robinson and Ray Goff, offensive tackle Ken Helms and end Mike Striplin.

Like all of them Mike Wilson was stunned and shocked. "I hung around with him quite a bit, although I didn't really know him all that well, I don't guess," said Wilson. "He was a real friendly guy. He didn't have any enemies that I could name. It was real hard not to like him, you know.
I was running and lifting weights with him only last Thursday. He was running real good, then he just took sick. One of the other players told me he got a fever of 105 and was slurring his words."

Atlanta Falcon guard Royce Smith, a former Bulldog All-American who had also worked out with Hendrix this summer, said, "I can't believe it. We worked out daily and he was the picture of health. When a guy that young and strong dies, it has to be a great shock. Thats certainly what I feel right now.

Hendrix was named to the ALL-SEC academic team for 1975. He captained his high school football team and lettered in baseball.

He played no. 2 behind Joel Parrish in 1974, then stepped in last fall. He felt he hadn't done real well in the Cotton Bowl and he was determined to go out with a big year.

"This is just one of those things you never expect and can't prepare for. I know his death will have a profound effect on the team.
"Hugh was a very consistent player who plugged along and got the job done with hard work. I was sold on him all the way. He was very consistent."

A business major, Hendrix was known as Harvey to his teammates. "He had a good sense of humor, very dry," said Dooley. "You could see it more as you spent time around him.
"He was very coachable, the type you enjoy working with because of his character traits. He was not super talented, but he worked hard for everything he got, which was to his credit."

It was not the first time in Dooley's career he had been subjected to a sudden death of a player. In the spring of 1971, Ed Milo and John Florio were killed in an Athens automobile accident..

"I wasn't even aware how sick he was." said Dooley "He was an excellent boy, an only child, which makes it all the more tragic."

Hendrix was expected to be a regular this fall. Naturally, no thought was given Wednesday to his replacement in the lineup. It was expected Georgia players would dedicate the 1976 season to his memory.

"We are all deeply saddened by his loss." said atheletic director Joel Eaves. "It is a tragic blow to coaches, players and staff. We extend out deepest sympathy to his family."
End of article.

This will wrap up any info that I can pass along.
I hope this forum helps people to find closure.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/12 17:30 I just joined this site and was reading through the comments about Hugh. What a wonderful guy he was! I was in the class of '73 and cheered my heart out for Hugh. I think I still have a picture of the two of us somewhere from a pep rally. Will try to find it and will post it for others interested in Hugh.
