Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/14 21:39 After Hugh's death and initiated by our principal, Mr. Charles Harris (himself a great person and All SEC football player); Shamrock started a Hugh Hendrix memorial award given to the student/athlete who represented Hugh's great merits. I was blessed with this award in 1980, my senior year and felt then and even today to have such a honor in his name. Yes, I still have this award! Mr. Harris and others really knew Hugh and expressed his strong character, his determination, and outstanding values. Hugh's name has been beacon to me!

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2007/08/29 18:25 I also grew up in the same neighborhood as Hugh but was several years younger. I lived on Homewood Court right around the corner from the Charles Harris family and up the block from the Bloodworths. I thought Hugh's death was caused by Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Sounds like it might have been unclear but there is no doubt it was very sad and untimely. I enjoyed some of my first touch football games with a very patient group of boys in the neighborhood that included Hugh, Tom Bloodworth, and Chuck Harris - very fine football company. And hello Lynn Marshall - I recall you were a fine babysitter to me - I hope I was good. And Tom Bloodworth, do you remember being the first kid to come visit me when my family moved in - we were about 5 years old - you brought your little watercolor set to share with me as my welcome. Thanks for that. I still love painting but gave up football long ago. Looking forward to seeing y'all in November.

Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2009/07/24 22:40 I played football with Hugh at Shamrock and we both were in the class of '73. I was the offensive center and he played offensive tackle. In his first few years, he was big and good but the coaches wanted him a more aggressive. For awhile, during the first years playing with Hugh they nicknamed him "Baby Hughie." Then, he gave them aggressive and a lot more. Hugh was always kind, and never complained, like I did. He quietly played good football and I remember as a person with great character and strength. As he went on to Georgia, I felt proud that to have played on the same line with him along with others like Billy Adams, Ben Gillis, Larry Kuykendall, Doug Elstead, Woody Woodward, Mark Paschal, Bubba Wilson, Mark Hanks, Jeff O'Quinn, Jeff Moore and a host of others. It was a good time for Shamrock Football with Hugh. We were ranked top 1 or 2 in the state for part of the last 2 seasons we played. Coach Cookie Ramos, who died today, was our Offensive Football Coach. I remember at the final football banquet Coach Ramos pulling me off to the side and saying "Tim, I really enjoyed coaching you a lot, but I had to give the MVP Offensive line award to Hugh Hendrix." And he well deserved it. He still lives in our hearts. So does Coach Ramos. I called his son Rocky as soon as I heard today. I hope there is a good turnout for his funeral next week.
