Re:Old Shamrock Neighborhoods - 2008/01/07 16:29
didn't that cougar belong to Dr. Livingston(?) the animal doctor whose office was across the street on Lawrenceville highway? Also, what was the name of the fruit stand right next to where the lion slept? Anybody remember that place? And then like a Jim Wallace station around there...maybe not Hess.
also, does anyone have any stories about racing down Mclendon drive?

Julie, you've been caught skimming!
The "fruit stand" was Mitchell's Market, as noted below (above?)...somewhere in that depth of text!...the Jim Wallace has come up before...opposite side of the road...cheap cigarettes. Not a smoker, huh? They had a box out by the pumps...drive-thru cigarettes, 32 cents a pack!
Obviously, Lew is the reliable source here -- Lew grew up on Mt. Olive (tell it all, brother!), and (now, still, Lew?) lives on Lawrenceville Hwy. I assumed the house where the cougar lived was gone. Most of them are...
Can you even imagine such a thing happening today? Zoning laws...animals rights groups...I know it was a controversy then, but geeeeee...especially after running loose in the neighborhood!
And I never knew of any connection between the cougar and the vet. Ask Lew, he's the expert (he survived because of his mother's protective instincts).
Susan...Rhonda Jackson lived in the old house on the corner of Montreal and L'ville Hwy...where the Red Roof (Accor?) is now. It was an old Victorian one-story with a wrap-around porch. I think it was her grandmother's. I remember spending the night and Rhonda telling me about the ghost who haunted that house...and I thought she was making it up!
And I don't remember any car races on McClendon, but Hank and I spent the first three days of our marriage in that apartment complex on McClendon at the St. Mtn. Fwy. bridge! Racey, huh?

Gail: I am not so sure how I feel about the title of "expert" on the old neighborhood. I have always heard an expert was a "has been drip, under pressure", but hey, if the shoe fits....
I moved back reluctantly about 20 years ago after my divorce to be close to my parents. They were getting up there in years and needed someone to help them out with some things (yard work, errands, etc). My Mom passed away a few years ago but my Dad still lives in their old house on Mt. Olive Dr.
I say reluctantly, but ya know Pea Ridge has a way of growing on you even though it has drastically changed. Also I got really tired of hearing people "bad mouth" the area as if it was the cause of all their problems. I am even thinking about running for Mayor, especially since no one else wants the job.
Expert, I don't know. I think I like "Resident Historian" (with a fading memory) better.

Re:Old Shamrock Neighborhoods - 2008/01/08 07:38
i also remember yvonne fambro and the Chihuahua's they raised ! those suckers would hit your ankles as soon as you emerged from the woods , and you'd have to call out to yvonne to call them off ! there was also a creek halfway between pangborh and pearidge . my brother , myself , and some other kids (cant remember now) dug a big hole and put this iron hatch door on top and had an awesome (although very dangerous) hide out! we also found this great treasure , quite possibly a dump site , where we dug up actual artifacts from the turn of the century . we found 5 model t tire rims that my g-father fixed up and made mail box posts and other things out of ! what great times we had as treasure hunters ! anyone out there remember any of this ? i would like to know who our fellow diggers were !

And let us not forget the neighborhoods of Drayton Woods, Idlewood Acres and Harbour Oaks. All of us crammed onto ONE bus to ride to school!! Oh joy!! What a fun ride that was

Wow, we are back to recycling, again!
One persons garbage is another persons gold.
I was not involved, but that is exactly the kind of thing I would have enjoyed. And still would. Thanks for sharing the story, Robyn.

Re:Old Shamrock Neighborhoods - 2008/01/09 12:04
Oh dear, guess I didn't get my trash mongering in when I was a kid...I'm still doing it!
My greatest find has been an "economy model" wringer washer...the wringer that got tossed onto the galvanized washtub when it was time to do the laundry...looks real nice with a clematis growing on it... And on the same day, I found a bunch of unbroken bottles, protected by an old tire. An amber Clorox bottle with a fingerhook, and several cobalt bottles and jars, like Milk of Magnesia and Vicks... And a bunch of special shapes and sizes -- some were instantly recognizable -- yes! that's the old Heinz Ketchup...etc. Everyone used to have their own personal landfill...
Lew -- we're familiar with helping the folks out...glad to hear your dad is still on Mt. Olive. Did they buy the house new, and if so, when? Remember what it looked like before they built Shamrock?
And I'm not forgetting your poor guys they bussed over from that little island in the Idlewood district! Was that the bus we've heard about before? How in the world did you guys end up at Shamrock?
Tommy -- you are one smart dude! I'd have honked too.

My neighborhood was/is North Valley. I lived on Homewood ct. there was the Paula Patterson and the Culpeppers on the corner, I lived next to the Praters, down the hill was the McGoffs all 10 of them! Mitchell Touret and Clark Warren. Marty and Max Huie, Coach Harris...theres more but they escape me right now. We had the creek that always flooded Medlock Park on one end and the woods that backed up to North Dekalb Mall we used as a shortcut to the Mall (pre cars)!

Re:Old Shamrock Neighborhoods - 2008/01/09 13:44
Didn't Ann Devendorf(sp?) live on the other side of the Prater's? And she had a younger bro? And a while back Marty's next door neighbor was online? And I hadn't realized that Coach Harris lived over there...
So could you really walk through the woods behind Marty's? All swampy and full of Chinese privet and starlings? And the product of starlings? That is the area that is designated a wetlands preserve...and apparently has a trail, somewhere. Anybody know where the trailhead might be?
When Hank and I drove around on Christmas Day, we went down Woodridge, then rode through the ball park area and on down Willivee. Obviously, there is a large undeveloped area between Woodridge (and the next closer street) and North DeKalb Mall.
Several homes on Willivee used to flood regularly -- in other areas of DeKalb, they have bought the homes and removed them, then turned the area into parkland.
Years ago Greg Puckett told me about the sign on the large old farmhouse on the next block over from Woodridge (name excapes me...Harrington?). The old house and garage apartment are still there, on acreage. Anybody know about that old house?
The sign on the gate (the gate is still there, but the sign is missing) said:
Be ye comin' or be ye goin' Be ye man or be ye woman Be ye early or be ye late Please be sure to shut the gate!
Marshall has an advantage over the rest of us when it comes to remembering where everyone lived -- he has an old Shamrock address book!
Here's a story I remember about Homewood Ct. (and I'm pointing noooooo fingers!). Somebody in that neighborhood thought it was fun go out at night and set up metal garbage cans on either side of the road, with a wire run between them. Then, they would sit in the bushes and wait, so they could cackle when a car came around the corner and trash cans would attack them unexpectedly from both sides.
(I most definitely disapprove of such activities...did then too!)

Re:Old Shamrock Neighborhoods - 2008/01/09 14:53
Yes Gail she did. Anne had a sister. Living next door to Mike and Paul Prater there was alot of things that went on that makes me shudder when I think about it. The garbage cans happened on a halloween night. You could walk from Martys back yard and there were several trails back there and one led to a old bridge that took you to a trail to the Mall. Max had a mini bike and a motorcycle he would ride back there. Nobody would go back there though when the gazillions of Starlings were around. If you fired off an M-80 or cherry bomb when they were roosting the sky would go dark as they all flew off. I assume they still come back there every year I have not been over there in a long time. Coach Harris had a cool house on the corner of Homewood ct and N. Druid hills cir.

Gail,
That house you spoke of was on Harrington Dr and I belive was the home of the Harrington family. The oldest son, Dan went to Druid Hills I think and John Harrington was a Shamrock graduate (class of '71 I think). I was in touch with John for a while but lost contact around 8 years ago. John Sellars may know what happened to J Harrington - last we heard he was in the N Ga area.

CONGRATULATIONS KAREN! ...Give that girl a hit of karma...I think she's the first one to ever achieve a triple posting!
Gosh, the old Harrington home, on Harrington Drive, inhabited by Harringtons? That all makes real good sense -- and is exactly the sort of info I'm delving for here. Thanks, Karen!
(And now I've got an excuse to talk to John, that hottie in the do-rag...!)

Re:Old Shamrock Neighborhoods - 2008/01/09 19:07
I believe you Karen. Who remembers the nursery on 29 that the Colberts ran? It was across the street from Wilkes meat market. Back to you Karen, were you and Ginny Colbert in the same Chemistry class with me? I think you sat behind me. Mrs. Shamus was our teacher. Bubba Wilson sat in front of me and I was constantly in trouble. Bubba would yank my shoes off and throw them in the hall. What a jerk!
Back to neighborhoods, my family lived on the corner of McClendon and Valley Brook. The subdivision is/was Peachtree Valley. Our house was on the corner that got "rolled" ALOT. The Crawfords lived on the hill across the street from us. Candy Crawford and Fred Sistrunk were the first two kids I met when we moved in. Tamara Pierson and the Garret brothers lived in that neighborhood too. We were always up to something. The day after school started in '68?, the bridge (on McClendon) across what would be Stone Mountain expressway was closed. Candy , Fred and I spent alot of time playing in the area that the expressway was being erected.
Does anyone remember when Casey Crawford and Rick and Tommy Garret hit that tree on McClendon where Earl Cain lived? Tommy died.
One more thing, who remembers the goat man? He had a nice little herd of goats that he walked down 29.
