ATL's "Great Speckled Bird" Newspaper - 2008/04/27 23:07 Who remembers the Great Speckled Bird newspaper?

I can remember as a little girl, my parents had some rather interesting fascination with loading Nancy and me up in our old station wagon and driving us downtown to see "the hippies" in Atlanta. For those of you who knew/know my parents, this might come as a surprise. Ours was a traditional "quote unquote normal" family -- active in the community, in church and in everything that Nancy and I did. It seems kind of funny to me now, looking back, that we would drive downtown to see these "sites" as "something to do on a Friday night".

Anyway, I distinctly remember driving around and around the blocks of downtown Atlanta just to see people on the street. Inevitably, we'd run across "a hippie" on nearly every street corner waving copies of "The Great Speckled Bird" as cars drove by.

As I recall, we all had to make sure that all car doors were locked and windows rolled up....yet, we'd make a trip downtown just to see this. Funny!

Today I ran across The Great Speckled Bird. It is again a viable Newspaper but is now on line. Here's an interesting article...may bring back memories for some of you who grew up in Decatur,Atlanta...my how times have changed.

Re:ATL's "Great Speckled Bird" Newspaper - 2008/04/28 06:51 That's so funny cause we did the same thing
growing up and like your family we had to roll up the
windows and lock the doors and of course was not allowed near Peidmont Park. What memories

Re:ATL's "Great Speckled Bird" Newspaper - 2008/04/28 07:56 After I moved back to Atlanta (Stone Mtn, actually) in the mid 80s to take a job downtown, my route btwn home and office usually took me by the corner of Ponce de Leon and Highland Ave (think Plaza Drugs and Majestic Diner), where I often saw standing on the corner, selling the Great Speckled Bird, the same yellow-blond haired, aging hippie who without a doubt I remembered in the same spot from the early 70s. I think this guy occupied that corner, with the paper held high, for 20 years or more. And believe it or not, I'm 99% positive that I saw him again --though the locks were a bit shorter-- several months ago in that same part of town, though without the paper in hand.

Does anyone else remember this guy?

Re:ATL's "Great Speckled Bird" Newspaper - 2008/04/28 10:06 In the early 70's, my Dad's gov. office used to play baseball against other gov. offices in Peidmont Park. I remember going to one of the games where a bunch of hippies were milling about - smoking and other undiscribable things...anyway, my dad walks up and tells 'em they got two choices, leave or play ball. It was wonderful, the suits and the scruffs making it work. I wonder how many of those hippies are now living in Buckhead and driving SUVs.

Re:ATL's "Great Speckled Bird" Newspaper - 2008/04/28 11:39 Yes Julie thats HOW dad would do things. he loved to make a friend out of potential enemies. What a great DAD he was then and still is. And sports and throwing balls was cool. He was the greatest DAD and What a cowboy to boot. Us Braschler kids were the LUCKiest Kids on the face of the earth and mom was cool too.She made comfort food before it was comfortable. I have a hard time understanding child abuse because I never under stood the idea. We were never abused. My greatest idea of fun is tossing the football with DAD. Thats what I want to do when i get to HEAVEN. I swear someday Jack...I'm gonna put a picture of me here...

Re:ATL's "Great Speckled Bird" Newspaper - 2008/04/28 11:49 Beverly, Wow! I too have fond memories of Dad driving us to "hippie town". But the article on the related link you posted really blew my mind! It makes me want to do something about it, but don't know where to start. It seems there is a need for a shelter that could provide immediate medical intervention and then a halfway house to recover and gain working skills to become self sufficiant or some type of work house in exchange for medicine, food, and shelter.
This is such a hard topic for people to truly understand! It's not Black & White. These people truly can't help alot of their actions. But they can contol some. Medicaton and a little help to get back up on their feet gives them more contol of their lives.

Are we allowed to say "bong" in here? Or will we be asked to leave if we use any term other than "water pipe"?

Re:ATL's "Great Speckled Bird" Newspaper - 2008/04/28 17:31 BONG!! That is the sound my Grandfather clock makes! So BONG away! Bang a gong or gang a bong...how did that song go? Hehehe!

I remember my Mama having to take my Daddy downtown once for something to do with his job. I remember seeing the hippies and the "fancy" women in boots and mini skirts. My parents made me close my eyes. I am pretty sure Brian kept his open!

Re:ATL's "Great Speckled Bird" Newspaper - 2008/04/28 21:06 Richard O'kelly class of 71 was a photographer for them back in the early 70's. Before I came to Shamrock i went to catholic High School downtown, St Joesph's and we used to sneak off to go to the old catacombs and roam the 10th street area in our ties and blazers! Marshall
