Who else got whacked by Coach Harris? - 2007/08/17 20:57
I got to see coach two times in my SHS career. The first time, I took detention instead of the paddle. The second, I had no choice. <wince>
Ed Wigham, Tony Mobley and I got into a bit of trouble in Mrs. Cain's study hall. The next day she sent us to Coach Harris' office. He needed a witness to paddle us, so he looked into the hall, and who should wander by but Coach Flanigan (merciful type that he was). First, he ordered Ed and Tony to call their moms. Problem was, Coach Harris lived up the street from me and knew my parents well. This was not good! He looked at me and said, wtte: "You don't have to call yours, she told me to wear you out if you ever stepped out of line." (What kind of mom would ever do that?)
Anyway, I got to bend over and grab a chair while he administered my punishment. Then he asked me, "What do you say when someone gives you something?" I actually had to thank the man for blistering my rear!
It was hard to sit down for a few hours after that, but I learned my lesson: Always wear extra underwear the day after you get caught.

Mark, The only time that I had to face Coach Harris was when Cyndi and I were sent to his office for a "PDA". We were nabbed by a short red-headed teacher (Miss Cronin?). But all Coach Harris did was tell us not to be so affectionate in the halls anymore. Now, 35 years later, the only ones that chastise us for our PDAs are our kids.

I got whacked by Coach Harris on multiple occasions. The first time I was scared to death. I had heard all of these horror stories. I guess I envisioned nails hidden, in the paddle, or something, like that. It did sting and burn for awhile. There were some bruises around, for a few days, also. After my first beating, I realized it was the quickest way to get my punishment, over with. When given choices I always took the whomping.
I have to say that I came to respect and admire the man. He cut me a lot of slack in the 10th. and 11th. grades. He knew I had a job after school and on weekends, so he let me use study hall time, to just leave early and go to work. I think he was in a gray area there, as I was never in any real work program affiliated with school. I believe he knew that my family had little resources and that if I was going to succeed in any way that I had to work those hours. I thank him for that. I also thank him for always being fair to me. Although, he was pretty upset with me, on more thank one occasion. lol
Interesting to hear Coach Flanigan mentioned. I heard all these terror tales of him b4 I started 8th. grade. I expected to see the Devil himself, cruising down the halls, dressed in his red suit. I only had him for 9th. grade phys. ed.. I never had a problem with him in that class, at all. I don't remember anyone else in that class, having a bad deal, with him, either.
btw, does anyone know if either of the above mentioned are alive and well? I hope they are.

Oh golly what a memory, I had forgotten I got licks. (first of all Miss Cain and Mrs Cronin -I dont know how to spell shivers)(But I thought Mrs Cronin was tall skinny with dark hair?!?) Anyway, One day a few of us went to school barefoot. The plan was to hide our feet under our bell bottom jeans. Mr Porter called us into his office. Besides the fact that I swear I heard my mom laughing on the phone when he told her, I got either detention or ten licks. I took the licks so that I wouldn't miss my ride home. He must have been easier than coach. They stung but it was ok after a while.

Obviously, you never got licks from Coach Harris! They didn't just disappear quickly.
Mr. Porter came in my SR year. By then I was too mature for making trouble...

Byron-- Sadly, Charles Harris passed away many years ago (very late 70's or very early 80's) after a bout with leukemia. His son Chuck (Class of '72) soon thereafter started the Charles Harris Run for Leukemia Research, an annual 10K road race from Tucker HS to Shamrock. It's become a very popular event on the local race calendar. I've run it many times and am always proud to let people know that I knew Charles Harris. I occasionally see Chuck at the run, as I did this past time (late February). He's still in the Atlanta area, as is his brother Scott. Hopefully, they'll register and show up at the reunion.

Phhhhhhhhht! I am choking on my laughter here, Mark!
And by the way, Porter's smacks were harder! I never understood why he made me come to his office just because I was at my locker which, was right outside my classroom door. I even had the teacher's permission, just not a "hall pass."
And he was a perv who wanted the drawers dropped! (Or was that just for me? Oh lawdy, I hope that wasn't just for me!!!)

The 'P' word designation is correct.
(Though you don't have to be a perv to think you were/are cute .. at least .. I HOPE not! ... )

Yes, I am serious. I was actually a pretty good kid (back then), but I almost got in serious trouble when I refused to drop trou! Fortunately, my Mama told Mr. Porter that SHE would take care of the problem. And she did! I can't believe my Mama gave me a spanking when I was a Senior in HS! How embarrassing!

I got licks from Coach Cates (deceased) who was a hulking physical speciman. Lordy that man could put some power into licks. Makes my rear end hurt just thinking about it. He was a good man though.

I'm still wierded out that you were even told to drop trou by a male faculty member, Susie!

Re:Who else got whacked by Coach Harris? - 2007/08/26 11:51
Boy, I still remember meeting with Coach Harris's BOARD OF EDUCATION..... me and Chuck Harris (Coach Harris's son) were talking, laughing or something in class during our Junior or Senior year, and we ended up getting sent down to see Coach Harris. I remember being so embarassed about it, because I knew Coach Harris well, from sports and running track, etc., and he was always such an inspiration to me. I also knew that me and Chuck were really gonna get a good one too...... I remember my bottom was really smokin' by the time we got back to class! If I remember correctly, Coach Harris would also give you a note to return to class, something like...."Please allow Ernie to return to class, he has met with the board of education"!! Coach Harris was a wonderful man and I know he is missed very much by everyone.... I remember he was always such an inspiration to me and I admired him a lot... he had been a great athlete at UGA,and a great teacher and coach to all the students at Shamrock that had contact with him... he always encouraged us to do our best in school and sports, and always set a great example for us to follow. I remember he would drive us to track meets in his station wagon during 8th grade track... he took us to some of the big track meets, like the Westminister Relays, and also ran with us and encouraged us to work hard to achieve our goals.
