no...I didn't actually work on the train, but Greg Attaway and I did work at the snack bar at the train stations....but here are a few memories of the rock I remember when we were little scamps.....
1. the scaffolding on the carving 2. busting your head or other parts of your body as you slipped while trying to cross the slippery spillway by the grist mill 3. the prison farm and the chain gangs working ( it was located where the camping area is now) 4. watching the 4th of july fireworks and then the awful traffic trying to leave the park 5. the yearly bumper sticker 6. the ku klux klan holding signs for their rallys near memorial drive and east ponce deleon 7. putting pennies on the "train track"

Re:Stone Mountain Memories - 2008/07/01 22:45
One of my SHS classmates told me that she remembers when there was no fence around the park.
I remember 1996 when some of the Olympic venues were held at Stone Mtn.
I knew the wife of one of the carvers of the historical carving. Evelyn told me that her husband, Howard Williams, kissed her good-bye before leaving for work. He said "I'll see you tonight" then left the house. That day there was an accident and he fell off the mtn. to his death. That was Aug. 1, 1966. After he fell, many of the carving crew quit. The most skilled at using a jet torch, Roy Faulkner himself nearly fell, but grabbed onto the hose of the jet torch which broke his fall. Pres. Nixon was originally going to attend the dedication of the carving on May 9, 1970. However, on May 4, 1970 the Ohio National Guard opened fire on students at Kent State. Pres. Nixon bowed out of the ceremony, sending VP Spiro Agnew in his place. In 1972, the carving was officially declared complete.

Who could forget the treacherous "Grist Mill Walk?" You used to knock me down on purpose, Brain! And remember the little "swimming hole?" I was afraid to jump from the high rock....
And who else wore out seat of their shorts from sliding down "the steep part" of the trail up near the top!

Re:Stone Mountain Memories - 2008/07/01 23:07
How many times did I go to the Rock?! Let me count the ways...
A few times every summer , some the "Canadian Way" ers, and us po' white trash from the John's Road crew, would cut through the woods to Brocket? Cooledge? road, then to East Ponce and then to the Mountain.
It was 7 miles, one way and it was an adventure every time.
I could tell some other date night stories, from later on, but I'll let somebody else go first!!

Lori Cannon and I climbed up the "other" side of the mountain to find a secluded place to work on our tans in '74 before we went on spring break to Panama City. I have no idea how we managed to get up there! It was definitely secluded!

Re:Stone Mountain Memories - 2008/07/02 08:01
It was the place to go on Sunday to wax your car. All the cars parked on the grass on both sides of the roads, everyone having a good ole time.
I think everyone attempted to climb up the wrong side, remember the kids back in the early 70's that got stuck up there and they had to resue them.
I still have some of those flattened penny's from the train!
Good Ole Stone Mountain!!!!!!!

Re:Stone Mountain Memories - 2008/07/02 11:17
I actually ran into Lori Cannon and her beautiful tan that year in PC. She talked me into following her back to her hotel to play volleyball with some guys she met--I, of course, ended up a lobster! I knew a girl from another school who played one of those Southern belles on the train--the "Indians" would drag her off kicking and screaming. I remember the bumper to bumper traffic around the mountain and regular Saturday night dates climbing the mountain--it was so cool because even though it was dark, the light from the moon made the stone glow enough so you could see where to go. And, anyone out there from Mr. Sull's JE calculus class of '76? Remember our year-end picnic at the mountain?

Re:Stone Mountain Memories - 2008/07/02 14:01
Too many trips to the rock to count. Only two visits really stick out vividly. One visit in 1976 involved me and three fellow Dragons (who are not, and probably never will be, members of this site) and Stone Mountain Park's Finest. The other visit in 1989 involved me and my husband and (again) Stone Mountain Park's Finest. Although they were close calls, I am happy to announce that there were no arrests involved!
And people wonder why I won't party at the park after dark ...

Anyone ever go rock-sliding on the wrong side of the mountain? Tyler macGruder taught me how. You simply sit on a flat piece of granite and slide down, balancing yourself by popping your hands down as you slid. You better not leave them down too long or your skin peeled off. And, oh yea, you didn't want to get up to much speed because the ride would abuptly end at a cliff. You definitely had to have some chemical imbalances to dare do it. I am surprised it never really caught on.

Re:Stone Mountain Memories - 2008/07/03 00:28
I know I burned up one clutch and one throw out bearing on my camaros 4 speed crusing on Sundays. Why I had to have Greg Puckett put that racing spring on my clutch...well I know why but it sucked in traffic! I remember a very wet blond after jumping off that rock at night who proceeded to sit on me to make sure I got wet cause I was NOT going to jump in that lake at night. I have not much luck with lakes over the years many of you know what I mean! Despite the expense of auto parts crusing around the mountain was really a blast and all the really nice rides would come out and show there stuff. Saw many a killer Vette old 32 fords, 55 chevys with the flip top front ends lifted while the girls in bikinis waxed there boy friends cars! In retrospect the poor police were so out numbered so like everything changes and the crusing days came to a close. Before Stone Mountain it was crusing down Peachtree down past 14th to 10th then over to the park. And Oh My God there were hippies walking around the streets back then too!! Those were fun days

Re:Stone Mountain Memories - 2008/07/03 07:19
I used to work at Stone Mountain too. I love that piece of granite and all the hot spots around it. Sweet memories of that place. Senior Skip day with Mahoney, Prifti, Kretchmyer and Hobbs. campouts by the petting area (but never at the "heavy Petting" area) Laying out on the "wrong side" with Vicki Baldwin Going to the beach with Kathy Gibson and her uber-cool beach towel. The Lazer Show with 10,000 of my best "screamin' redneck" friends and Sunrise service on Easter Mornings at the top of the mountain...Thanks for taking me along sisters. And 4th of July fireworks! Lisa, remember that time you climbed the banister? AWESOME!
