Re:Northlake Mall - 2008/11/16 09:19 Gosh - The Gold Mine......and I think a clothing store called The Merry-Go-Round. JC Penny's. I remember when they opened a Wendy's (?) in the corner beside Baskin Robbins and across from Chick-Fil-A. We used to go upstairs and throw snap-n-pops from the 2nd floor to the lower level and scare people jill mooney folk

Re:Northlake Mall - 2008/11/16 21:25 Then you will remember this:
"Ladies and gentlemen, cats and dogs, lats and lads and little green frogs. Stop what you are doing and swallow what you are chewing." That has been stuck in my head for nearly thirty years and I want it to go away.

I worked at Farrell's for several months. I think that it was my first fo' real job (I was the official baseball scorekeeper at Medlock Park for several years' previous).

Remember how they used to run "The Zoo" (a giant bowl of ice cream, cake and whipped cream) around the restaurant on the shoulders of the busboys while drums banged and bells rang, stopping at the customers' table?

One day, another busboy and I ran a Zoo underneath a coat rack at the end of an aisle. The whipped cream, cherries and chocolate were sheared off the top of the Zoo by a very expensive fur coat. I remember that the woman was extremely angry and the manager promised to pay for cleaning.

While running another Zoo, I slipped on a water puddle and crashed into a water station. I ripped my pants, bloodied my shin and bruised my forehead.

Fortunately, I was in the back at the time. If you recall the Zoo run, you remember that the bowl sat in a cut-out in a board that had handles on each end. The handles extended over the busboys' shoulders so the guy in front would be running with the Zoo behind him. Had the busboy in front not been able to hold on, the Zoo would have been on the floor with me.

I despised working in the dishwash room. The smell of cold chili mixed with warm ice cream and half-eaten hamburger was almost unbearable. I spent a lot of time in the dishwash room.... I guess fur coats and restaurant patrons were safer with me in there.

Never worked in a restaurant again.

wow , no, that was before my time..you must really be old...lol.

Well, meOW!

At the Merry-go-Round the male employees waited on the female customers and vice versa. Patty Hotop sold candy at the entrance of Sears and Beck Dryden sold jewelry at the kiosk near the front entrance. J.P. Allen's was a great place to shop and I saw my first Cabbage Patch Doll in that store. It was wearing a mink coat and some bling!

Re:Northlake Mall - 2008/11/17 14:29 I bought my entire wardrobe at county seat for maybe $70 - jeans were $15, as were cords. Velour shirts were $10. If you really had money...you could shop at pants circus and get the jeans with leather on the pockets...

Re:Northlake Mall - 2008/11/17 14:32 PS - I remember riding my bike from our house off of Idlewood road, down E.Ponce to Brockett, cooledge roads and up to the mall. Did it all of the time. Parents could not have cared less, and you were safe. I don't think any parent in their right mind would let their kid do that today...

Re:Northlake Mall - 2008/11/17 17:45 OK - I just found this website, and I have to tell you that one of my favorite memories of Northlake Mall in it's early time, was me and Jimmy Van Gundy sitting on a bench, and Jimmy telling me what people were thinking as they walked by. Too funny what he came up with! And of course I loved Farrell's too!

Steve,
Oh yes, Spencer's Gifts. Among other things they had posters, black lights, cards, t-shirts, pooty-cushions I bought a laughing box there! You'd push the button and it would play a recording of the loudest, funniest laugh. In my senior year in chorus class after a song the teach, Kenneth Harris, asked if there were there were any questions or something... I really don't remember. I just remember pushing that button and the class roared! Mr. Harris took it away from me but let it finish laughing first! He did give it back at the end of class.

Re:Northlake Mall - 2008/11/17 23:38 After Northlake Mall was built I applied for a job at Davison's (now Macy's). The last position they had was in giftwrap. I accepted it. The store was not yet open for business. Then Doug Wilson's mom Pat offered me a job at Doctor's Hospital in the accounting dept. She would be my supervisor. I didn't even work one day at Davison's. I called the store back and told them I'd not be able to work for them and why.
The Wilsons lived one door up and across the street from us. I usually rode to work with her since I didn't have a car yet.
Since 2004 I've had this one particular client. She just turned 89 in Sept. She was the supervisor in giftwrap at Davison's Northlake for years after they opened! She would've been my boss! And now she is! I love to tell this story.

Re:Northlake Mall - 2008/11/19 10:33 Yeah, Good ole North Lake Mall. I worked at the Orange Bowl for a few months. It was a hoot. Pizza slices, hot dawgs and ernje drinks. Robin
