Rehoboth Church Fire 1969 - 2008/07/04 23:13
Rehoboth Baptist Church Nov. 30, 1969
"3-Alarm Blaze Levels Sanctuary in DeKalb" This was the title of the article from the Atlanta Journal. The article read as follows: A three-alarm fire Sunday virtually destroyed the old sanctuary of the Rehoboth Baptist Church in DeKalb Co. and also damaged an adjoining structure. The Rev. Lester Buice, pastor of the chruch for the past 22 years, said worship services and other church activities were being held in a new sanctuary and an educational building across the street from the old structures. The church is at 2997 Lawrenceville Hwy near I-285. "Both the old sanctuary, which was virtually destroyed, and the adjoining educational bldg. were scheduled to be torn down sometime in the near future. The old buildings have been used in the past by youth organizations and a kindergarten," the pastor said. DeKalb Fire Chief Dudley Martin said the blaze of undetermined origin spread from the brick-veneered sanctuary to the adjoining educ. bldg. Forty-five firemen from 10 companies responded to the alarm which was sounded shortly after 5 pm. A company of firefighters still was at the scene Monday morning pouring water on smoldering debris.
This was the biggest fire I had ever seen. The whole community watching as it burned. Black smoke was everywhere.
