Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around? - 2008/01/05 21:10 Plantation was my home away from home along with, Stoneskate, Skatealong, and I can't remember the name of the rink we would hit every once in awhile in Conyers. We were hopping rinks like some of you guys were hopping bars, (I am sure of it)!!! I will never forget when Cherri Bedford and I were best friends (she went to Clarkston), and we both entered the 15 yrs and older skate contest at Plantation. I was only 14 at the time and Cherri was 16. Well, we both made the semi-finals, and then, she was cut and I went on to the finals only to win the whole thing after many, many, songs one right after the other. Cherri was so mad that I won she told the officials that I was only 14 yrs old and so, I was disqualified. I was told that I would have to compete in the 15 yrs and under contest the following Saturday. And so, I showed up, made the semi-finals and, made the finals only to win the whole thing!!!!!! So, I won them both!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say, Cherri and I weren't best friends after that anymore. Aaaaaah. I felt so badly for her!!!

I loved to skate then, and I still love to skate now. It's awesome exercise. Anyone remember "The Alabama Special?" Never have understood why it was called that.

Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around - 2008/01/06 01:12 How many of you were big fans of Medlock Skating Rink before she burned to the ground. There were some interesting stories about how that fire started. Anyone out there remember anything about that. It broke my heart!!!!!

Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around - 2008/01/06 20:12 Rink hoppers! There's a new one on me...and "beat downs"? Are you talking about GIRL FIGHTS?

I would love to go skating sometime, but I'm afraid that at my age, I'd just embarrass myself...and then I look at Hank and think "Nope -- no way!"

Whatayasay Roxanne? Wanna go skatin'?

Jamie, do they have skating rinks in Idaho?

Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around - 2008/01/07 23:27 I still have my worn out boots and Canadian Reds! I wish I could skate even 1/4 as much as I used to! I am way too old and fat for that now. Now just one time around and I need to sit and rest! I will just use the sucky music as my excuse for not skating anymore! We need BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet," or Free's "All Right Now" to REALLY skate to! (To quote Lisa B: "More Cowbell!)

Jamie, I don't know about you, but me and my buddies had several different versions of "The Alabama." Different songs had a different dance. Some of my favorite people to skate with (and learn from) were Cyndi Armstrong, Wayne Thomason, Pat McAbee, Dennis & Scarlet Michaels, and Sandra & Susan Hoff (Tucker HS).

Seems like Cyndi and Wayne won some huge competition skating together to the song "Philadelphia Freedom" by Elton John. I have an old 2nd Place trophy somewhere for skating to Nazareth's "Hair of the Dog." The funny thing is, I never knew the words to that song until I was about 25 and heard it! No WONDER my parents were not all that impressed with me after they watched me skate to that song for the competition! OOOOOOOPS!

Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around - 2008/01/07 23:41 AWESOME!!!!!! I was going to add to my post "Remember When" "The look on my sweet mothers face the first time she heard me crank "Hair of the Dog" on my stereo!! ! It was almost as bad as the look on her face when she ventured in to the Stadium to pick me and Darlene and Sara Baxley up from that all day concert. The one with Johnny and Edgar Winter, Blue Oyster Cult, and many others, but KISS was the last band of the night and things were running behind so we weren't where we were suppose to be and she came to find us. Meanwhile she is watching KISS in all their glory from an entrance. The three of us walked rigfht by her and my sister and when we made eye contact I don't know which one of us looked more like "Deer in Headlights"!!!!!!!! I didn't get to go to many concerts after that one with her permission.

You were a good skater Susie!!! I do remember that!!!! And you know it is funny that you mentioned Wayne tonight. Because I checked my classmates which I haven't done in months and Wayne left me a message with his phone number. I emailed back with the "Rock" website address and have left a message on his voicemail at home. I hope we get to hear from him soon. I know that he and Cyndi were great friends, but he and I were great friends for many a year. I miss him. Talk about a "HOOT"

We did have different dances to different songs. It was great fun! I just don't know why they didn't call it "The Georgia Special"!!!? I loved to watch Pat McAbee, and do you remember Eddie Otto? He was a good skater too.

Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around - 2008/01/08 22:49 I heard the song "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" today. Another great song to skate to! I always wanted to try to skate with Wayne... now that he is here, who knows?!?!?!

I feel the need to dust off those old skates!

Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around - 2008/01/08 23:22 Whoooooorah!!!!!!! Girlfriend! It will be late summer before we get there, but, if I make it, in time, I will be pulling the "Caboose" in the back!!!!!!!

Bet you guys will be picking me up off the floor. (Yeah Right!!!) I bet we would alll be picking each other up off the floor, cuz where I come from if you take me down you are ALLL coming with ME!!!!!!!!!

I pulled a "Tupid" and decided to dedicate "My Boot's" to my oldest sister's youngest daughter.. (DeeAnna) Along, with the greatest "Barbie Collection". Included Barbie, Ken, and many various outfits! For Both!!!!!! Thank GOD for 7th grade and those liberal talks out on the playground. There comes a time to put the doll's away. But, should have never parted with my Chicago Wheels. And, the "#@**#!!!!!!!!!!!!!little Couldn't tell you where they are today. That's okay. A good pair of skates is alot easier to break in than a new saddle!!!

I will never part with "HER"! But, those rental skates truly "SUCK"!!!

Let's Do It!!!! Some of you might get to "DO IT" before I do but, that will be the breather you need so that you can "DO IT" again when I get HOME!!!!

Oh Yeah, special request will be "Black Cloud"!!!!

Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around - 2008/01/09 09:21 Hey Everybody,

Wow Jamie, Black Cloud what a great song that was to skate to. Eddie Otto, there is a name that I had forgotten about. I wonder how he is doing these days. I do skate every now and then, but you are all correct. One song will do me in. How in the world did we use to skate song after song and not seem to get tired. The contests were always fun. I remember going to Dalton, Chatanooga, Macon, Alabama and locally at Playland, and Sparkles for contests. Those were such fun times. We really should try and get a skating reunion together. I wonder what ever happened to Bozo, Doris and remember Bill Schrek. He was the Big Security man. Good Times

RandyJ take note -- I think this is why your mother let you go to concerts -- she just simply DID NOT KNOW!

Re:Any other Plantation Skating Rink alumni around - 2008/01/09 12:52 Pat,

I haven't thought about Bozo in years! Wish we could find Eddie and Vinny!!!! Remember her? Awesome skater. Funny too!!! Also, Lisa Allen and her little sis Sherry (was that her name?). You know, I bet a handful of us paid the electric bill for the rink!!!
