Re:Smoking - 2009/03/12 13:12 i started smoking around 1980, then at about 28 years old i decided i would quit at 30. so in nov. '92, a couple weeks after turning 30, i quit or stopped if you will. for the next 12 years i did not have even one for the next 12 years. then in nov. 2004 i started back. i was like a new smoker. i almost had to make myself smoke after all those years. i smoked until 2006, stopped for 9 months, smoked another 1 1/2 years i quit this last time on sept. 1 2008. yea, sometimes i would like one, but i know i can get by without. i proved that to myself for 12 years. at 46 years old, smoking now would really be stupid. i know i don't have many guarantees for tomorrow, but i do have the guarantee that smoking is AWFUL for my health. what helped me originally was
1 - saving those nasty cig butts in an ashtray. they stink and look absolutely disgusting.

2 - realizing once you do those things that remind you of smoking, like driving, eating, etc., the first time, it will get easier each time thereafter.

i calculated how many cigs i had smoked. like 18 per day times 365 days times 12 years = close to 80,000.wow, i think i've had enough.

has there even one study ever done that supports smoking as maybe being okay. i don't think so.

Re:Smoking - 2009/03/12 16:51 I encourage those that haven't smoked not to. My dad smoked since I was way young. I have a pic of him walking with me when I'd not been walking long. He was holding my hand and in his other hand he had a cigarette. In the 80's he got Emphysema and later lung cancer. He died at age 71 long before his time.
So learn from his mistakes. And to those that have quit BRAVO!

Re:Smoking - 2009/08/29 14:12 Can y'all believe I quit smoking 1 year ago today! Yea!!!!

Many thanks to all of you who shared your great success stories and sent your support. (Especially Doug!) It made something that seemed impossible possible.

Although she's not a current member of this website, I have to give the biggest, most heart-felt thanks to Elaine Pickens Moore who got me thinking hard about doing this thing!

(Robert? You still hanging in there?

Re:Smoking - 2009/08/29 23:11 Wow!

Who'da thunk that being a quitter would be a good thing?

Seriously ... I doubt I'd have ever made a serious attempt to quit smoking if not for posts made on this website.

I hope this image from one of Ms. Susie's earlier posts shows up ~ it says it all!

Re:Smoking - 2010/09/01 13:25 I use to smoke 3 pack of cigarettes a day. I quit in June of 1996 and haven't smoked since. I couldn't imagine smoking today because if i hadn't quit when i did i probably wouldn't be around today. Thank God i gave them up. Congrats to all of you that have quit.
