Re:Hugh Hendrix - 2009/07/24 22:40
I played football with Hugh at Shamrock and we both were in the class of '73. I was the offensive center and he played offensive tackle. In his first few years, he was big and good but the coaches wanted him a more aggressive. For awhile, during the first years playing with Hugh they nicknamed him "Baby Hughie." Then, he gave them aggressive and a lot more. Hugh was always kind, and never complained, like I did. He quietly played good football and I remember as a person with great character and strength. As he went on to Georgia, I felt proud that to have played on the same line with him along with others like Billy Adams, Ben Gillis, Larry Kuykendall, Doug Elstead, Woody Woodward, Mark Paschal, Bubba Wilson, Mark Hanks, Jeff O'Quinn, Jeff Moore and a host of others. It was a good time for Shamrock Football with Hugh. We were ranked top 1 or 2 in the state for part of the last 2 seasons we played. Coach Cookie Ramos, who died today, was our Offensive Football Coach. I remember at the final football banquet Coach Ramos pulling me off to the side and saying "Tim, I really enjoyed coaching you a lot, but I had to give the MVP Offensive line award to Hugh Hendrix." And he well deserved it. He still lives in our hearts. So does Coach Ramos. I called his son Rocky as soon as I heard today. I hope there is a good turnout for his funeral next week.
