Pangborn Puckeyknockers - 2007/08/06 09:54
Seeing Marty Fortner's name on the new members list reminded me of a fun time playing street hockey on the tennis courts.
Jim Golden and I formed a team to battle Marty and Jim Tyson's (?) team. Marty and his friends were all ice hockey players while I and Jim, our little brothers and sisters and older kids from the nearby daycare center were... not.
Jim Tyson was a goalie and had all of the fancy goalie pads. I was the goalie for our team. I "built" my leg pads out of cardboard, wood paneling, carpet remnants, burlap, old belts and lots of duct tape. Each one weighed about 70 pounds. With some cardboard arm pads (strapped on with clothesline, of course) and my baseball first baseman's mitt, I was ready to go.
Marty's team was called the "All-Star Volts." We called our team the "Pangborn PuckeyKnockers," primarily because it rhymed.
I remember one particular game (we didn't play many; you can only take so much humiliation) that the P.P.s (we didn't anticipate that abbreviation) lost to the Volts, 9-1. It was a war of attrition; it was mainly our players who were being attritted (I think that's a word).
Marty would check one of our players over the tennis net; our player would quit. Marty would set his sights on another teammate; our player would run. I fell in front of one blistering shot then, unable to get up because of the leg pads, blocked another low one. But Marty could make his shots leave the ground, a talent which made the strategy of playing from a prone position somewhat less effective.
We finally scored one goal late, I think while the Volts goalie was on his water break.
I think I will try to organize a special reunion of the Pangborn Puckeyknockers in conjunction with the upcoming event. Volts need not apply.
