Any Alumni or Family served in the Military? - 2008/09/06 21:27 I was wondering if any of our Class of 1978 or any SHS Alumni had served in any of our Military Branches or any of their family members and if so what branch and when?

Re:Any Alumni or Family served in the Military? - 2008/09/06 21:39 My son in law, Larry, is in the National Guard reserves. He served a year in Iraq, returning home in April 2006. We hope that he does not have to go back. We are all very proud of him and grateful for his service to our country.

Re:Any Alumni or Family served in the Military? - 2008/09/06 21:43 My brother Mark - Air Force, Duane (Buddy)- Marines, and I was in the Navy as a Machinist Mate working in engine rooms of several ships. All of us in the late 70's to early 80's...none deployed to any "action" but helped win the cold war...

Re:Any Alumni or Family served in the Military? - 2008/09/07 00:21 My dad, Lauress Clark Early served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He enlisted on 9-25-39 at the age of 19. He served in Tunisia, Sicily, Po Valley, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno and North Appenines. His highest grade was Corporal and he was awarded/decorated with the following: Fame Theater Ribbon with 6 Bronze Stars and the Defense Service Medal. As well as being in the 106 Engineers he was in the band. He was honorably discharged on July 6, 1945. My brother Steve still has dad's army jacket.

The next year dad had a fall and fractured his left leg. He was taken to the Veteran's Hospital in Memphis where he met my mom who was an R.N. there. I guess you could say he fell for my mom!

Re:Any Alumni or Family served in the Military? - 2008/09/12 09:17 Spent over 21 years in the Army and retired in 2005. Started as a Medical Equipment Repairman and ended up running Maintenace Shops in the Army's Largest Hospital at the end. Turned colors and came back the next week as a contractor doing about what i was doing before retirement. I'll steal a line from Steve P and say way to many adventures/misadventures to list here. Was a great way to start my path to adulthood. Maybe i'll get there one day.

Re:Any Alumni or Family served in the Military? - 2008/09/12 14:17 20 yrs. 1 day flying in the Navy. Miss the flying, not the B.S. and the close calls. Survived two crashes, saw the law of averages catching up with me and opted for retirement. It, also, helped me on my way to adulthood. I don't think I'll ever quite get there either, but I'm having a great time on the way. "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin"
