Teachers are people...? - 2007/08/25 14:55 It is odd to run into people in public out of the context in which you know them best. It seemed odder still to me to run into teachers in places where you are being adults together...how bizarre

If you took art you may have had Brian Aiken or oh, Sherry Nicol could help me with her name...McWhinney??? Freida??
I was at a wedding...lets just say they had a champaigne fountain...and I turned when I heard a familiar voice (kind of slurry I might add?!?) and there was Mrs McWhinney.(sp?)
Now I must say, I love her dearly, I visited her after graduation, I loved art and she taught me soooo much. But in that moment there was clear awkwardness brought on by my saying "Well hello Mrs McWhinney".
It was apparently a first name kind of situation because what ensued was a creepy attempt to explain to a man standing there (Not that she was on a date) that we were not that different in age but that I was a student and please call her by her first name.
I did go see her at the school one last time. I think she was leaving to go to another school. Her departure completely unrelated to the wedding encounter.
The last time I talked with Brian he was teaching elsewhere as well. He was selling his pottery at Piedmont Art Festival.

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2007/08/25 17:34 Yes we should. Seems Jay is great at that. Hope he is reading.

I just thought of another one.
You remember hall passes. There were blue ones that you would have to get all your teachers to sign and they had to have the 'office lady' signature on it.
She would sign it "V. Sharp" (Cannot remember if there is an e at the end. and Yes wife of GUY Sharp our dear weather man.)
Not that I ever did this but if one could obtain some of those blue passes and imitate the way she signed them one could potentially get back into class with an excused absence...or so I heard.
Well, years later, '89 to be exact, I was teaching a therapeutic aquatic class for a group of women and one of the women started talking about her husband Guy who does weather...
I said "you are Mrs. Sharp as in V Sharp"
She said yes
Before I knew what was happening I confessed
(not that I did really or not that I would ever have used these to fool teachers and never would I have thought about doing this for all my friends) So...after apologizing profusely or maybe as I was ...we were all laughing hysterically. She was so awesome about it and could not believe me...
(We are in the clear here, as far as years gone by...right Lee Bonner?)

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2007/08/26 00:10 Lee,
I am not sure, I thought her name was Mrs. Mckinney, but after thinking a while, I think you might be correct.

This has got me thinking about another topic.
I should start a post looking for the artist amoung us.

PS My name is spelled Nicholl
lol

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2007/08/26 02:27 Lee, I think the statute of limitations has expired. You should be safe!

And Sherry, the was a Ms. McWhinney AND a Ms. McKinney.

Ms. McWhinney was the Art/Graphic Design teacher. She always wore very colorful silk scarves/bandanas in her hair.

Ms. McKinney was a (very tiny) Math teacher. Somewhere along the line she got divorced and changed her name to Ms. Rippy. She was a big hit with all of the young (hormonal) guys! From what I understand, she married Allie Cone, a former student.

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2007/08/28 17:42 Oh my word Mrs Mckinney the math teacher. One day she gave us this test. If any of you remember it I would love to know. Number one at the top of the page said to read all the instructions before starting. As you read the instructions it had you doing allllll kinds of things like circle your name and put this shape around that number and write this here and such. When you get to the end of the test the last instruction was to only do the second instruction which was to sign your name at the top. When I read it that was when I realized that some of the class was sitting with pencils down with a knowing smile, some of the class was madly writing and circling and dashing, and some of US were erasing like mad...HA hoping noone would notice or something. OH well. Mrs McKinney got a big laugh out of it and said her favorite part was watching people start to erase. Hmmmmph.
I still read instructions to this day. Every single one and never have left over parts when I assemble things.

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2007/08/28 18:31 Another teacher gave that very same test (they must have plotted against us in the teachers' lounge). I also now read all instructions before starting any task. I even read software manuals and licensing agreements, mortgage contracts, etc. -- the test made me REALLY paranoid!

BUT... it has paid off. Very recently, I was at a rental lake house with Karen Cagle and some of her friends. We were about to use the gas grill. One of the other women (Karen, Peggy didn't go to SHS, did she?) was taking the lead. She read the first instruction out loud and laughed. "Read all the instructions first." She was proceeding to #2, which said to push a button on the back of the grill. Karen moved around to the back to push the button. Peggy has VERY long hair, and she was leaning over the grill to read the instructions printed in very small letters on the edge of the grill. She was reading #3, which said to turn on the burner, and reaching to the knob to turn it, when I yelled at her to ONLY read! #4 said that the flame should now be on and to use another knob to adjust its height. I was freaked out, but her hair didn't catch fire, and we averted disaster and an unpleasant interruption to our otherwise perfect weekend. Thank you to those teachers who had the foresight to help us learn the easy way how to save ourselves from our own impatient enthusiasm!!

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2008/01/01 11:39 Just read this post and started thinking...her name was McFarland. Was she also a McKinney? I know she was McFarland and Rippey...

Lee Bonner, can you clarify this for us? and....did anyone ever find Ronnie?

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2008/01/10 06:16 These are my memories of the teachers at Shamrock during my very short lived year and a half studentual ( is that a word?) career there. In Miss Harts class, we were just awful act outs. Sherry Fortner would walk everywhere on her hands. We drove that poor women nuts. In Mr Barfields class, we would light matches and toss them in the bottom of the desks of other studalents. I sat behind Nolan Little. I liked him because he had more freckles than me. I remember Mrs Wright talking about a car wreck she had, because she saw a spider dangling down in front of her and when she tried to knock it down, she wrecked. There was Miss Hambrick. I was very rebelious at that time and I passed a note to someone and in the note I put (if Miss Hambrick gets this and reads it then she is a B____), well she got it. If looks could kill, I'd be dead. Needless to say, I failed her class. Dawn Hawks, (not sure of her last name) tried her very best to try and talk me out of quitting school to get married. OH How I wish I had listened. She was a great teacher. Last, but not least, was Miss Brown. She told the class and I have a wittness (Connie Hall) that after she died that she wanted to be reincarnated and come back as a grasshopper. NO LIE, SO HELP ME GOD!>

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2008/01/10 06:59 I had several of the same teachers. I remember playing chess with Mr. Barfield. I still like to play chess. No one else seems to though. I had my ups and downs with Miss Hambrick. I'm quite sure the downs were my fault. Miss Brown was quite a character. She very much believed in reincarnation. You don't have to convince me that she might have wished to be a grasshopper. I remember her saying that she had been reincarnated as an instructor, many times over. I have to admit, someone asked me once if I had to come back as an animal what would I wish to be. I said a penguin. They do look like they have a lotta fun. These days I think I would prefer to be a wolf.

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2008/01/10 13:34 You Go Wolfish Boy! When I was a young chile, I use to walk down to Twin Bros. Lake and have a Pepsi in the bottle with peanuts in it, and wish that I could be a duck. I would sit there at the picnic table and say to myself, if I were a duck, I could just float on top of the water and every once in a while stick my head in the water and check out the fish, and if I got board with that, I'd just fly over the trees to the ball field. Now that I am a very mature woman, like Byron, would like to be a wolf also, then we could romp the wilderness together. Remember Ya'll, I was not the one who changed this subject.

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2008/01/10 15:49 Maybe that would be a good question for the QUICKPOLL!
If you could come back as whatever you wanted, what would you come back as? Do any of you class of 80ers remember Stuart McAlpine and his Sear's and Robuck reincarnation application papers? Class? Anyone? Class?

Re:Teachers are people...? - 2008/01/10 16:35 Julie, are you quite certain you don't make these things up? There was that one about the molasses...

I took Creative Writing with Mitzi Brown...one of her firm rules was to never use the same word twice in a paragraph. Another thing I'll never forget was her telling us to SPEAK FROM THE DIAPHRAM(sp?). You know, the one in your chest.

I think it would be great if Miss Brown decided to come back as Miss Brown. An encore would be so perfect for a drama teacher! And she always said we could use repetition for effect.
