Drag Racing Rocks!! - 2008/04/29 20:13 I hope those that said they were going out to Commerce for the Southern Nationals made it out this weekend. Hey Mona did you and your husband make it? I almost bought the Tee shirt that says I love the smell of Nitro in the morning! Marshall

Re:Drag Racing Rocks!! - 2008/04/29 20:38 Shoot! Look at my post under NASCAR - I missed the whole darn thing! I'd LOVE to have that shirt ...

The best NHRA shirt I have is a muscle tank that reads "SPEED LIMIT - 350 MPH" .... As far as I know, they haven't quite made that speed yet.

I'm so sorry I missed you (and the races).

Re:Drag Racing Rocks!! - 2008/04/29 21:04 Tim (my hubby) turned me on to drag racing in 1991. Tim walked me up to the fence, stood behind me, put his hands on the fence (on either side of me) and held me there ... the first 2 dragsters of the day came screaming past us and I couldn't cover my ears or run or duck or anything --- he got a great deal of enjoyment out of that! But I have to say I was hooked - line and sinker - on drag racing from that split second on.

Tim has been into drag racing for a looooong time ... I hope this pic posts properly - his dad is the fellow on the right wearing the jacket. He was co-owner (with the man in the center) of this dragster in the 60s. (Notice the engine is in the front? Anyone know why the engines got moved to the rear???? )

Re:Drag Racing Rocks!! - 2008/04/29 21:49 I do believe it was thanks to Don Garlitts who moved the engine to the rear after blowing half of his foot off from the clutch exploding.

Re:Drag Racing Rocks!! - 2008/04/30 08:29 It was indeed Big Daddy Don Garlits (a/k/a Rat Under Glass). Here's the explosion - if it doesn't show up, I'll try again later:

Seriously, I can't wait to see some pics of what I missed. I can almost hear and smell it all right now.

Re:Drag Racing Rocks!! - 2008/08/01 11:33 been awhile since i last posted , but this thread is like , my teething ring ! lol ! i attended my first drag race in '74 , at dixie dragway . back then 'the pits'were just a pull-off in the dirt for most drivers ,vip's had some pavement or a little concrete . anyway , we were strolling around the pits , with our plastic gallon milk jug of hamms draft , and stopped to watch a team replacing a manifold . it was pretty banged up , with peeling blue paint , and i turned to my future x-husband and said "yours is prettier than that ! " the man kinda scowled as he looked up , then smiled when he saw the look of horror on my boyfriends face , then started laughing ! you see , the day before , i had watched as my x put a brand new edlebrock(? ) intake on his 427 2-door chevelle ss,and the man i insulted was none other than 1/2 of the famed sox and martin duo ! after that , every time i saw mr.randy sox , he chided me about that day ! and any one remember the apple orchard next to commerce where the die- hards camped for 3 days and partied !?
