The Silver Comet Trail murder trial. - 2009/05/10 18:27 Hi guys...don't know if you're familiar with the Silver Comet Trail murder but it happened a few years ago. I will be on the jury...opening statements are tomorrow. I'm very nervous about it, and I'll let you know how the experience was after the trial is over...this is all I'm allowed to say about it now.

Re:The Silver Comet Trail murder trial. - 2009/05/10 20:05 You're a good man for knowing to keep what you hear and see to yourself until afterward. I assure you that you're not nearly as nervous as are the lawyers putting on the show you're about to see. You'll be fine.

Re:The Silver Comet Trail murder trial. - 2009/05/11 10:46 Good luck and I know the jury, attorneys and judge will do the right thing. I am very familiar with the case. I am glad for the family that justice is finally going to take place. I am just very sorry that they have to relive this event again but hopefully it will be worth it this time. Keep us updated. Re:The Silver Comet Trail murder trial. - 2009/05/11 15:36 I well remember the horrible and senseless murder of Jennifer Ewing on the Silver Comet Trail a few years back.
Hoddy, I am sure that you will be a prudent and responsible juror, and I deeply hope that justice in this case will be served.

Hey TJ I think we decided last year that it was NOT the same Michael Ledford that went to Shamrock. Seems like someone found out that the one that is accused of doing this crime was several years either older or younger as his birthday was on something.

I think I am remembering this right. I will say there was a posting on here or maybe we were in chat talking about it. The picture most definitely showed several similar features with the one that went to SHS but the age was quite a bit off.

Anybody remember us talking about this a year + ago? Am I remembering this right?

Re:The Silver Comet Trail murder trial. - 2009/05/22 22:17 Hoddy.....Great service by you and the other 9 men and 2 women on the jury.

As we did determine some time last year and also confirmed by his age of 46, this Michael Ledford was NOT the Michael Ledford that was in the class of 78 at Shamrock.

I just wonder what his mother was thinking as she gave her statement to the jury saying he should live if that "is what HE wants". What about what the victim wanted.

I am not sure that being put to death is the right answer for all like crimes but this man did not appear (on tv anyway) to show an ounce of remorse for what he did to a woman who was trying to keep herself in good shape to hopefully live a long and fulfilling life.

Of course we all know there will probably be many years of appeals and this man may never die by the lethal injection as the decision of the court, but at least the decision has been made and justice has been served!

Re:The Silver Comet Trail murder trial. - 2009/05/23 11:50 Thanks...I'd just like to say that the past two weeks have been the most heart and gut wrenching weeks I've ever been through...nothing can prepare a person for such an experience and I feel honored and privileged to have sat on a jury with those 11 jurors and 4 alternates.

The sentencing deliberations were really tough...as soon as we got into the deliberating room we took a silent vote...it was 10-2 in favor of death. The two who were against it let us know who they were...it was a man and a woman sitting by each other directly across the table from me. We started hashing things out and it seemed like after 2-1/2 hours we weren't getting anywhere, they were pretty staunch in their position...everyone seemed to be arguing the specifics of the case and it was pretty much chaos...I don't say much in situation like that, but I had a point I wanted to get across and asked if I could speak...everyone quieted down and I stood up and proceeded with the following...

I told them that we, as jurors were tasked with finding a just punishment for Michael Ledford. I then pointed out that he had spent around half his life incarcerated in various locations, he was no stranger to prison life, that he knew how to play the system to get what he wanted in prison...I then pointed out that if we gave him life he would have among other things...

Three meals a day
A prison store to shop in
TV
Exercise and physical fitness facilities
Access to a phone
A libarary
Computers and internet access

I reminded my fellow jurors that many people who have spent much of their adult life in prison actually prefer prison to life on the 'outside'

I then went on to remind my fellow jurors that Ledford's attorneys and Michael had asked us to give him life in prison.

I told them that by granting Ledford life we would be giving him exactly what he wanted and I asked each juror if they could sleep soundly at night knowing that they had given a man convicted of such a brutal and horrific murder the sentence that he wanted.

Everyone sat silent for a few moments and then went back to arguing. I noticed the two who were against death were talking quietly to each other and a minute or two later the woman looked at me across the table and in a very soft voice said 'we need to vote again'. I immediately told the foreman we needed to vote and both of the two holdouts voted for the death sentence. Later on after the verdict had been rendered they both came up to me and said that what I said had been what changed their mind.

Re:The Silver Comet Trail murder trial. - 2009/05/23 13:15 Hoddy,
As I listened to news of the trial over the past few weeks, knowing that you were one of the jurors, I contemplated how I would behave in such a process. I'm sure I will never really know untill put into the same situation. I can say that I really admired how you and your fellow jurors came across as conscientious and deliberate in your descion. Not offering any immediate response to the press upon leaving the courthouse was a testament to you all being class acts.

Thankyou for your service to the community.
