Probably already talked about... - 2009/05/29 08:11 I am new here and just testing the ole memory before Alzheimer’s finally kicks in. Does anyone remember:

Geometry class with Mr. Barfield?

Biology class with Br. Beck?

Gym class with Coach Upchurch or Coach Cates?

Business class with Coach Collier?

Shop class with Coach Wells?

Coach Wells was probably my favorite teacher. He called me Cotton because my hair was so blonde back then. He would walk around the shop class with a dowel rod and whack you just on general principles. It was all in good fun but I saw him bring a tear to many eyes. It was a hoot.

There was a guy that I think his name was Randy Brodecki or something like that. He was a nice guy.

Remember John Hall? Coach Wells caught him in the bathroom doing something but nobody would ever talk about it. That was about the time I was experimenting with pot so I figured it was something along those lines.

In 1973 and 74 I drove a Volkswagen to school (illegally) and one day Coach wells had a bunch of guys pick it up and set it between two trees. Like to have never got that thing out.

I am still carrying a tattoo of a Wilson logo from games of Warball in the gym.

Anybody know:
Hank Hay?
Jimmy Ledbetter?
Bobby Birdsong?
Mitchell Ledford?
Steve Ragsdale?
Grant Turner?
Tony Butler?
Connie Davis?
Todd Mauldin?
Chip Ingram?
Allen Williams?
I think the name was Karen Polk?
Vickie Guthrie?

It is great to think back to those times. It was a great period in my life and a fun era to live in.

Re:Probably already talked about... - 2009/05/29 08:18 I remember my first class with Mr. Barfield..... I had a study hall in a senior math class, and it was just plain WILD....It was lunch period, and people would bring back forks from the cafeteria, and throw them up in the lights. I remember huge spitballs hitting the blackboard while Mr. Barfield was writing on it..... I acually felt sorry for him, until I had him for a real class the next year.....

Last time I saw Coach Cates was when he helped carry me down the hall after I ingested a bit too much of a recreational drug.......

Re:Probably already talked about... - 2009/05/29 08:29 Yes, Mr Barfield was tough as a teacher. It was funny during a test he would turn his hearing aid down and you could practically talk out loud asking people for answers...er...ummm..though I never did!

I remember the first time I got 3 licks by the vice principal. I was accustomed to a little barrage of whacks by Mr. Gupton in elementary school and figured it was no big deal. These 3 licks in high school would raise you off your feet! I don't remember the guys name, but I remember he sort of looked like Rhett Butler in Gone with the wind. It only took three licks to figure out I did not want any more.

Re:Probably already talked about... - 2009/05/29 09:20 If it was Mr. Porter, I left alot of pain in that office at the end of that paddle. The worst was when they called me to his office from gym class. He gave me several "licks" with that paddle and I was only wearing my gym shorts and jock. They offered very little protection. Re:Probably already talked about... - 2009/05/29 09:35 I remember those paddles too.
The last time I was in for "licks",,there were 6 of us. Mr Dimbo called us by last name. Seems Rodney Weatherford was called before Wilson. I recall the door closing and Dimbo told Rodney to "bend over and grab that chair". Then I heard Rodney tell Dimbo,, "if you hit me with that board,, I'm kicking yo ass".
Dimbo sent Rodney out and told the rest of us to get "get the hell out of his office".

Thanks Rodney !!!!

Ole Dimbo didn't last long

Re:Probably already talked about... - 2009/05/29 09:42 That's the name! Mr. Porter. He enjoyed his job way too much.

Great story about Dimbo and I would not have wanted to experience licks in gym shorts.

Re:Probably already talked about... - 2009/05/29 11:14 Seems like I got taken to the assistant principles office, I think it was Mr. Griffin, but I'm not sure. Hehad a way of making you think he was one of us. I remember even offering him the remaining pills I had in my pocket......not a cool thing, I was escorted out in handcuffs by Dekalbs finest, never to be allowed to return again......what a day !!!

Re:Probably already talked about... - 2009/05/29 19:38 Oh wait, Mr. Griffin was the guy who taught world geography and some writing class. He was a reporter for the associated press and used to be gone a lot whenever he would get an assignment. He really had an ego but he seemed like a nice guy. Shame he was a narc.
