Nicknames? - 2007/09/06 15:49 Did anyone have an interesting nickname in high school, and an interesting story of how you got it? Here's mine:

As a couple of other people on this site can probably verify, if you're a guy with the last name Woodruff, you will inevitably be called "Woody" at some point in your life, and I was, from time to time. But the nickname that really stuck with me was "Frank", a name bestowed upon me by Sherman Ledford, who sat directly in front of me in Ms. Moulard's algebra class. Our first conversation went something like this:

"What's your name, kid?"
"Lyle"
"Huh?"
"Lyle"
"Lyle?"
"Yeah, Lyle"
"Hmmm....I don't like that name, I'm gonna give you a new one"
"Okay" (I wasn't about to argue with him)

A few minutes later:

"All right kid, your new name's Frank"
"Frank?"
"Frank. Frank N. Stein...hahahahahaha"
"Okay"

Since a number of my friends were sitting nearby and overheard this exchange, from that day forward I was Frank. That nickname stuck with me for YEARS!

Re:Nicknames? - 2007/09/07 08:27 Good 'ol Sherman...he was probably single-handily responsible for most of the nicknames people had at SHS while he was "in charge". He was a nice guy and a lot of fun to be around.

His nickname for me was, "bigfoot". I guess back then a size 13/14 was big but now a lot younger kids have big feet. I used to love hearing the chant, "bigfoot, bigfoot, bigfoot!" during basketball games. I could always count on our student section for a pick me up (Lord knows we needed many).

His nickname was much better than the one the game announcer, Mr. Byrd (sp.), gave me..."silk". He said it was because he thought I played as smooth as silk. Although I appreciated the compliment, most guys just don't like to be called silk. Fortunately, the student section liked bigfoot better.

Re:Nicknames? - 2007/09/08 00:44 Having four older brothers I was known (by default) as:

"Ron's
Mark's
Bud's
Brian's.....Little Sister"

Eventually it just got shortened to "Little Martin."

(I have been called much worse...and usually by the previously mentioned brothers!)

Re:Nicknames? - 2007/09/28 17:17 I have no idea to this day why I got this nickname, but my first day in the band as a drummer, Fred Sistrunk nicknamed me "Jew". Kitzie Lee even referred to it when she signed my yearbook in the 8th grade. I'm sure others had worse nicknames for me. (Especially Mr. Porter) "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin"
Morgan Freeman "Red" in the Shawshank Redemption
