That Guy Bob Griggs - 2010/02/04 19:52 Bob Griggs was(is) a bit older than me. I remember going to a Shamrock High football game when I was still at McLendon Elementary and watching him lead the band into the stadium. There was nobody more bad-a$$ than Bob when he was leading the cadence - Bob and the Drum Team echoing under the concrete entrance of wherever the hell we were. I think that the band director then was McLintock then, It became Mr. Gajownick the year after I came in. Both of those band directors were great to me.

Thanks for running this board Bob. Thanks for inspiring me to join the band too. It did not hurt that I had a crush on just about every girl in there either. Band Camp was always awesome! "One time, at Band Camp . . . "

Bob - Did you and your brother (was it Mike?) ever live in Emory Woods apartments? I know it would be hard to admit as those run-down "project" apartments were my home for all the years I was at Fernbank Elementary. Seems that I had a memory of you guys living there at one time.

Do you remember all of the ancient Studebakers of all different colors that were dusty and parked in the carports? I never knew why those cars were there.

We used to walk to the stores at Clairmont and North Decatur Road... shoplift incense from World Bazaar (the statute of limitations has run)... eat a foot-long Chili dog at Zesto's... and ride our bikes to the Medlock Park swimming pool in the summer.

And, every year, the kids would collect used Christmas trees from around the complex, drag them to a vacant lot at the top of the apartments near Clairmont, and build a huge fort. After a week or so, DeKalb sanitation would come pick them all up.

I really don't think that you ever knew me but we (the true life long apartment dwellers), took lessons from you and your brother (was it Mike?) where Christmas trees were concerned and took things to a new level long after you and your brother moved on.

I remember the garage parking there; yes I do. There were tons of collector cars in those apartments, including those Studebakers.

For what it is worth, you truly owned that Tri Tom drum set . . . I can still hear that cadence and it inspired me tremendously. You hear it still too, right?

Re:That Guy Bob Griggs - 2010/02/18 00:03 My dad worked for Studebaker in Memphis in the 50's. We had one that was two-toned blue one. I've got a pic of it with my bros and I sitting on the hood. I wish we still had it. So cool!

Re:That Guy Bob Griggs - 2010/02/20 09:27 Frank Mashburn and I came up with that cadence that we used to play all the time. Every time I get near a drum set now (which isn't often), I play it.

We were the low-rent, 'cross the tracks drum corps compared to Southwest DeKalb and some others, but we sure had fun.

At band festival at DeKalb Stadium one year, the SWD band had broken in line and made it to the single entrance gate before us. I couldn't stand SWD... they would walk past you without smiling, those hats pulled down over their noises like a line of robots.

There are several band members that I'm aware of on this site that were quite dedicated to Shamrock's band. Our football team, though filled with talent and dedication, did not win much. I recall the adults telling me that most schools' attendees left for concessions at half-time and that ours stayed to watch the band perform. Inspiring.

Brian Spratling and I broke echelon in the last song of our last marching (Senior year) performance and wailed our trumpet parts at the front. Gajownik was not pleased and sent us to the bus - he even came out to speak to us, but I swear he smiled through it. About 2 decades later, I sent him a note saying I was sorry for putting him in that position . . never heard back. - Rick Lambeth
