Race day registration will be held at Tucker First Baptist Church beginning at 6 a.m. ONLINE registration cuts off at 3 pm on Thursday, Feb 25. To register online, go to the race website at www.charlesharrisrun.com.

Encourage all your friends and neighbors to come out! This is a Peachtree Road Race Qualifying event- one of the few in the city. It is the fastest 10k in the city.

Re:Charles Harris Run Saturday With Over 1,500 - 2010/02/25 10:28 Hey, this is Jack Hullings' little sister, passing on an email exchange we had a few weeks back, so I can brag about my big brother.

On Feb 8, 2010, at 5:19 PM, GAIL COBLEIGH wrote:

Hey -- This is the post on the Shamrock Reunion site -- I didn't realize it was such a big race -- do you do this? Have you done this? Are you going to do this? Just curious, Ricky Downs will be running with his son-in-law, according to a later post.

JACK HULLINGS (Class of 1970) replied:
I ran the race the second year it was held, when it was a four miler that started on Country Squire, ran through Pine Glen and finished on the track (I finished near the front but don't remember what place) and I ran it again as a 10K on the current course. Charles Harris is my second fastest 10K, after the 1981 Peachtree Road Race -- and it will remain there forevermore. No more times like that in my future. I've run one race in the past two years, after Lisa (his daughter) invited me to run with her and Matt in the St. Anthony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg in 2008. Lisa swam, Matt rode, I ran 10K and we finished 3rd out of 38 mixed teams. If I ran anywhere near my old times we would have blown everyone away... but I'm too old to race much. I volunteer -- Peachtree (25 yrs), Atlanta Marathon, ING Marathon, ING 13.1.

More to the point of your will I race question, I won't be doing much running near-term. I tore the cartilage in my right knee a week ago. Crossing Clairmont Road near Mom's, no reason, just decided to give way. I felt a tweak, I finished the run, and then the knee swelled up big time. I have arthroscopic surgery planned next month -- after we return from our ski trip to Montana. A little trim work... then good as new, I hope....Jack

Wonder how that knee held up in Montana...?

Re:Charles Harris Run Saturday With Over 1,500 - 2010/02/25 10:55 Thanks for posting, Gail. Sorry to hear about Jack's knee trouble. However, I'm not understanding the "too old" rationale he offered there!

Re:Charles Harris Run Saturday With Over 1,500 - 2010/02/26 08:33 Ricky, I think there is a certain personality type that seeks achievement -- that egotistical male drive that demands that a man not compete just to enjoy the run and camaraderie, but to WIN.

I think what Jack is really saying here is that his winning days are over!

Although, to be honest, I think Jack has always been "up in front". He chased James Price around a lot, that I do know. That guy had legs of steel!

I'll never get over the day I was headed over to Jack's and was eyeballing a guy in Lycra on the way...OOOPS! that's my brother's booty in those tights!

In 1982 Jack pulled out of the Peachtree at the last minute, after having stomach trouble all that week. My sister was interning at AJC and working the casualty tent, so she didn't get to see her brother come in on a stretcher, fortunately. Turns out his appendix had ruptured and he was still running as usual.

Since then, he has broken his ankle tripping on a pine cone as he started down his driveway on a run. He bikes and skiis, so there's been some wear and tear there... he seems to have a certain need for speed in his life, I'd say! The rest of the family moves at a much slower pace, for sure.

You know, as the years go on, we do accumulate a list of, well, old age points, I guess you could call them! Some of us just have more points than others?

You two are FINE an example of what high school sports can do for kids. Once they got ya'll trained and running, you just never stopped!

Re:Charles Harris Run Saturday With Over 1,500 - 2010/02/26 21:58 I've stopped more than a few times, Gail, but eventually started up again. Ran very little in my 20s, but something about nearing 30 awoke me from that stupor. It's been stop 'n go ever since, but the layoffs have been brief except in the case of a couple of injuries.

Questioning my sanity about tomorrow morning, though. Sounds like temp won't make it up to 30F until after we're done. Brrrrrrr

Re:Charles Harris Run Saturday With Over 1,500 - 2010/02/27 12:47 Thanks, Susie. It was a lot of fun. Cold but fun, and it's always good to finish at SHS and hang out --and warm up-- inside the gym. Saw Chuck Harris there after exchanging shoutouts earlier around Mile 2, but not another familiar face (other than my son-in-law Paul) despite what I think was a record field of over 1500 runners on this the 29th anniversary (30th running) of the Charles Harris Run for Leukemia.
