Atlanta Hockey memories - 2011/06/04 14:08 With the sale this week of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg, it brings back memories of the Atlanta Flames leaving for Calgary. I had a lot of fun going to Flames games with the gang - Daniel Johnson, Randy Jackson, Martin Ogle, Jay Renfroe, Kirk Smethers, Kevin Thayer, and others I'm ashamed my memory cells have failed on...and y'all forgive me if you didn't go to a Flames game with me, but you were buddies, right?

Playing at the Omni, that unique organ music, Boom Boom Geoffrion, Dan Bouchard in goal, Willie Plett enforcing, Tom Lysiak & Eric Vail scoring, Pat Quinn on defense, and the Zamboni! Not terribly southern, but lots of fun, and even a playoff game or two (a rarity in town at that time) And always, a stop at Krispy Kreme on Ponce de Leon on the way home... cannot imagine the volume of donuts we consumed as teenagers...

Not a very wild life, but a fun one to remember.

Re:Atlanta Hockey memories - 2011/06/05 09:19 Awesome memories! I had never seen a hockey game in my life, knew nothing about it, and thought it sounded "really dumb," until my HS boyfriend took me to see the Atlanta Flames in 1979. I WAS HOOKED! To this day I am a huge fan and watch it all the time.

I have a friend in Nashville whose son is playing in the Junior League. He has been on the Springfield Junior Blues, the Alaska Avalanche, and the Bismarck (North Dakota) Bobcats. He is trying to make it "into the bigs" of NAHL. People find it hard to believe that a Southern Boy can play hockey, but he is really good and just might make it! I hope so!

I hate it that Atlanta has lost ANOTHER hockey team...grrr!
