Sputnik - 2008/07/06 16:51 Back in the late 60's there was a number you could call and connect with other teens. This number would connect you to what was called Sputnik. After calling the number you'd hear several kids talking at once. They weren't really talking because you had to scream to be heard. I would get on there and single out one male voice and get his home number or give him mine (screaming the whole time). Then he'd call me or I'd call him so we could talk. All the other teens were doing the same on there. My parents would get so tired of me screaming. I had a white princess phone in my room and would close my bedroom door and get in my closet then close that door and scream into receiver.
It didn't help because my mom and dad could still hear me. We also had a line in the basement so I went down there to make those calls! Does anyone remember Sputnik?

Re:Sputnik - 2008/07/06 20:58 Yes true, a Russian satellite but also a great phone connection for teens in the know back in the sixties. I don't know what the letters in Sputnik may stand for maybe someone else does. My brother, Clark remembers talking on the phone connection. He said that you had to yell out one word at a time just to be understood. I remember that also but after yelling about half a sentence I couldn't stop laughing! I do remember getting a number and the guy calling me then we hung up and got back on ready to yell again!

Sputnik was also a wrestler way back when. But, that's another post.

Re:Sputnik - 2008/07/07 07:36 this wasn't SPUTNIK but it was scandle-wise...Do you remember when it was the "fad" to call long distance friends and only let the phone ring once? or, you could call the operator and make a collect call to yourself at your long distance friends house, which was code for "hi i am thinkikng about you"...of course the person on the other end (your long distance friend) would say something like, oh my, i haven't heard from "soandso" in ages, how is she...well, the oiperator would know...sometimes this could go on for a while. My mom and my aunt pulled this in the 70s.
The other big fun thing was to call the operator and say you think the ringer is broken, could you please dial my number. The operator would call and then youd be all like "yeah, phone call for me...i am popular" say it on the brady bunch and had to try it for myself.

do you remember the Party Line??????
I had a friend that lived up the street from me that was on a party line, it was funny you could pick up the phone and hear other people talking. Then you had to wait to make a call until they were finished, or just listen in like we did sometimes.......

PARTY RING!!!! I have one of the original ones! The colors don't change like they should. It mainly stays a dark, bluish color. I told you I'm a packrat!
I'd really be grooving making a call at a party, on my party line and wearing my party ring!
I also have a newer party ring I got a couple of years ago. I never did have one of those rings they advertised on TV. I'm talking about the ones with the inter-changeable stones! LOL Who had/has one of those!
