Southerland's 8th Gd. Civics Class, 1974-75 - 2007/10/31 00:21
This is disturbing, I know, and I promise you I'm not like Rain Man...but I just happen to remember the entire roll of Coach Southerland's 8th grade civics class. So these forums are so entertaining, I am compelled to share.
Mr. Southerland called this roll in the same monotonous tone and rhythm at 8:20 am every morning for an entire school year, and it sank into my long-term memory. Here goes.
Baldwin Bennett Brown Cannon Clark Curry Dalbey Fitzpatrick Fitzsimmons Fong Frazier Goodspeed (Goodspeed? Goodspeed? He was never there.) Jones Lester Maguire McDaniel Morrison Norris Palmer Pike Rice Shelnutt Stainback Strickland Terry Thornsberry Vet Wainwright Walsh Whiddon Zeigler
I think I know all of the first names...but I can fill in details in a later post. Those of you represented on this "roll call" can chime in on this forum! It's a little slice of the class of 1979!

I am totally impressed - how do you do that?
Do you recall all things like that?

I swear, I don't know why I remember this, and it's the only thing at this idiot-savant level of detail that has *ever* stayed with me!!! All I can say is that Mr. Southerland was very consistent in his delivery, and I sat up front.

Nicki, hold those cards close to your chest, dear. One day it will serve you well.
As you're in the midst of memory-eradicating menopause, and your husband is accusing you of forgetting something important, just put your hands on your hips, stare him in the face and say, "My memory is perfect...I can even recall my 8th grade civics class from 1974, can YOU?!" Then let it rip.
I doubt you can use it more than once, so save it for a doozy.

Dana, when I find myself in need, I have a good one ready to use.
Here goes
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Nicki, in all seriousness though, the roll call is quite impressive! I would be doing well to remember a half doz. people that were in any of my classes from eighth grade.

How did I escape that class? I remember reading novels in his class...Centenial and some other one. I can remember a lot of the first names for those folks, but not all. Andrew Goodspeed had prettier hair than I did. It was nearly to his waist.

I'm being "Rain Man" again, but I think we read Centennial in 11th grade American History? And also, there was some book about Albemarle...? There is a picture of it in the yearbook, half-burned, because everyone in our grade had to read it and it was awful.

Who was it that brought in the moonshine still when we were studying Foxfire? Now THAT was a great project from those books. (What did I do for my Foxfire project? I made apple butter! LOL)
Byron - you're good ... I can't sing the alphabet much less type it!

Mona, you are too funny.
A bit of trivia to ponder.
When you are given a sobriety test, the police insist that you recite the alphabet stoically, rather than singing it. I did not make that up. Don't ask me how I know!

Yes, the story was about Abermarle. But I don't remember the title. Geez, Nicky...how do you do that?
Were you in J. Ellis Lloyd's AP English class with us? My next door neighbor graduated from SHS in 1990 , and she said Mr. Lloyd was her favorite teacher. I don't remember exactly when he started teaching at Shamrock; you "older" folks may not remember him. Anyone know where he is now?

Re:Southerland's 8th Gd. Civics Class, 1974-75 - 2007/11/01 16:09
I actually liked Mr. Southerland – he was more of a professor than a HS teacher … he made you dig deep and think. In retrospect, he was one of my favorite teachers – off the beaten path, if you will.
As for disturbing (and my hubby will testify that I am really weird about remembering jingles and theme songs) … here’s one for the books –
“bun seed sesame a on onions pickles cheese lettuce sauce special patties beef all two”
NO – I did not look that up … I just know it for some bizarre reason (AND I worked at BK!)
(PS – Byron – we must’ve been in the same traffic stop … Ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaa!)
