Re:Laurel Ridge Elem - 2007/08/11 22:01 Beverly,

I went to Laurel Ridge, but in a very different way than you're asking, I'm sure. I moved to the Shamrock area in the summer of '76, before my junior year, so missed elementary school, subby initiations and lots of other fun things.

But for a while during '76-'78, Jay Renfroe and I had jobs as after school janitors at Laurel Ridge. It's how we made our Braves & Flames ticket money. We always had to do the things the daytime custodians didn't want, or at least that's the way we thought. We emptied trash cans from every classroom, swept out every classroom, all hallways and the cafeteria, scrubbed every piece of porcelain furniture in the building, and mopped behind ourselves. Five days a week. Hard work, but I remember having more fun than it being miserable. I still tie trash bags the way Charles, the day custodian, taught us to tie them up without twisties.

Please don't tell my wife - she mustn't ever find out I really do know how to do such cleaning activities.

I remember our arrangement was that we had a certain amount of time each day to complete the tasks. If the day crew had time to complete any of them, we wound up with a slow day, and got some "free time" on the clock. And the cafeteria ladies knew we were there, and if they had leftovers from lunch, they'd leave them in the warming oven or fridge. Only the good stuff, though. I remember institutional trays of brownies left for us, and we could take some snacks and milk down to the library and watch the evening news on TV until time to clock out. Your tax dollars at work (but sadly for us, not too doggone many tax dollars, as I remember). A great start to some very bad habits!

So, any of you Dragons from Laurel Ridge in '76 or '77, I just want to say THANK YOU if you were one of the kids who DID NOT have an accident of some kind near the end of the school day, which is when the day crew just sprinkled sawdust liberally over the evidence and left it for the night crew to clean up!

Re:Laurel Ridge Elem - 2007/08/12 09:46 Great stories, Jay! What ever happened to Jay Renfroe? I heard he was a TV producer in LA. I even saw his name in the credits for a show once. Do you two keep in touch?

Re:Laurel Ridge Elem - 2007/08/12 10:49 nelson,
I remember Mrs. Kibler's her name well...but I cannot place her face. I looked up Mrs. King about 5 years ago...called her and chatted for awhile. She also went to church with my late grandmother. She was so thrilled to hear from a former student who appreciated and learned from her. She said that students look her up from time to time. I know from my own parents that when people look them up out of the blue and thank them for something they've done it just completes their lives. They are so appreciative.

Mrs. King was truly a legend. I credit her with so much.

Just found Lynn Fink through the SHS school website. She has been teaching there but is transferring to Laurel Ridge this year. I told her about this website and I think she may join up. You may know her..

Thanks for commenting --- take care and have a great rest of the weekend!

See my post on Jay Renfroe elsewhere in this forum, under his name for the subject.

Take care,

Re:Laurel Ridge Elem - 2007/08/12 16:03 I went to Laurel Ridge too....as did Brenda Weiss and Mary Ruth Fletcher. I actually subbed at Laurel Ridge a few times. The halls were somehow narrower...LOL!

Holy Cow...does anybody remember Ms. Benbenisty? (spelling?) She would just LOSE IT in the lunchroom and stand up to SCREAM at all the kids. You could see all the other teachers stare innocently down into their egg salad sandwiches. That woman had NO business caring for innocent babes. She must've had a serious PMS problem...

I had Mrs. Kibler and Mrs. Brandon. What a rarity! Elderly women for teachers! Not something you see these days. Mrs. Brandon and I had the same birthday and she lived across the street from Grandmama...so I kept in tough with her for years and years.

I can still see Mrs. King saying, "Clyde Shield! You're going to give me apoplexy!!"

Who remembers having to wear a dress to school UNLESS it was 32 degrees or colder? That was Mr. O'Quinn's legacy.

Jay, I can't believe yall were janitors there! You just missed working with the one who retired...Mr. Lorenzo....Lomanzo? And yeah, the yeast rolls were great!

Re:Laurel Ridge Elem - 2007/08/12 23:10 I remember Mrs. Benbenisity (I don't know how it was spelled, either!) ... you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT in your assessment of her, Dana ...

Mrs. Pelletier (science in 7th grade) was great, and Mrs. Schmidt (short timer ... but she wore the SHORTEST SKIRTS!) is a memory worth keeping (smile).

And I laughed out loud at the mention of Mrs. King's 'apoplexy' comment! She must have said it a thousand times! ... kid in my class with blond hair (can't remember his name) used to start every sentence with 'So anyway', even when he was speaking to the class ... she would roll her eyes and look like she was going to shoot him!

She used to tell us that there would never be a sentence in the English language where you had to use the word 'got' ... she hated that word ...

Remember how she used to read to the class from 'O Ye Jigs and Juleps'?? ...

Beverly .. are you related to Nancy Trainer? ... and yes, Lynn Fink and I were classmates .. probably from 1st grade through graduation from SHS ...

Re:Laurel Ridge Elem - 2007/08/12 23:16 Dana,
I absolutely remember mrs. benbenisty. somehow I equate her to mostly math...is that right? or did we even have teachers at laurel ridge with specific subject areas?

She was crazy and mean, for sure.

And Harold O'Quinn....I remember that whole dress thing...that was nuts too. Do you remember how they used to actually PADDLE people? Not something you see these days, for sure!

Nelson...nancy is my sister...
and Mrs. pelletier...I do remember her as well.

And Alonzo..God bless him! No telling how many messes that man had to clean up!

When I started at laurel ridge, we didn't even have chocolate milk. It was plain milk or nothing...people used to mix up their carrot raisin salad inside their milk cartons and then pour it out into their trays! YUCK!!

Re:Laurel Ridge Elem - 2007/08/12 23:22 Bev,

Your sister Nancy was/is the coolest ... she was easily one of (if not THE) nicest girls in our class ... sweet as the day is long ...

(I know, I know .. she's your sister ... so you may roll your eyes at that one .. but from an objective viewpoint, she was!)

Tell her 'hi' from me next time you talk to her.

Re:Laurel Ridge Elem - 2007/08/13 09:47 OMG. Carrot raisen salad.

Do you remember how the cafeteria ladies would give you a popcycle if you ate EVERYTHING on your tray?

I had to FORCE down every bite of carrot raisen salad..dry-heaving the whole time...but, dangit, I was going to get that elusive popcycle!! I proudly handed in my clean tray JUST AS my teacher yelled, "LINE UP!!!"

Nowadays, just hearing the words carrot raisen salad turns my stomach.
