Re:Plantation Skating/Skate Along/ Stone Mtn etc..... - 2007/12/07 21:11 I loved to skate! I went every chance I could! (Mostly to Plantation because I could walk there.) Remember doing the different "Alabama" skate dances, Couples Skate, speed races?

Re:Plantation Skating/Skate Along/ Stone Mtn etc.. - 2007/12/08 00:38 Julie,

You definitely have the song right. My 15th birthday was a surprise party at Plantation. I grew up skating at Medlock until it burned down. It was convenient at the time (and I am soooooo thankful), because my mom worked two jobs for nine years, at that time she worked for the Dekalb County Board of Education in the cafeteria's (Laurel Ridge) Elementary, and the "OLD Hickory House" on N. Decatur Rd. She would drop me off at Medlock to begin with, on Saturday's. I would skate all day long. I could walk from the rink,if I needed to and meet her at "Old Hickory House"! It worked for me! I guess that is where I learned that I had a competitive nature.

Re:Plantation Skating/Skate Along/ Stone Mtn etc.. - 2007/12/08 11:26 Skating at Plantation. Those were fun times. I worked there from the time I was 16 until I graduated. To many funny stories and for the most part I can't remember any of them(the mind is not what it used to be). I do remember getting snowed in one time and staying there for 2 days. Anyway, the all-night skates, and contest's were always fun. I can remember how crowded it was on Friday and Saturday nights. Anyone up for a game of Paddle Tag? Oh, as far as songs go, it had to be either All Right Now or Black Cloud,

Re:Plantation Skating/Skate Along/ Stone Mtn etc.. - 2007/12/08 19:49 Snowed in at the skating rink! Was it a dream, or a nightmare? How long did you skate for free before you got tired of it?

I loved to skate, but never really did the skate hangout thing. I can remember going to (Friday Night Skate?) at Medlock...with the crystal ball spinning...(and the support columns)! We had to wait in line, and then it was a crush to rent the skates and change out of your shoes. Of course the reeaaal skaters owned their own skates! It was something back then just to hold a guy's hand while you skated around the ring...just makes me smile!

Roxanne Street was an ace skater...backwards, forwards...hands-down a goer & a spinner! It was kinda embarrassing putzing along behind somebody who was simply incapable of losing her balance...

whatayasay Rox? couldya still do it today?

And can't you just smell that BBQ from across the road? Remember the little juke boxes they had on the tables at Old Hickory?

Re:Plantation Skating/Skate Along/ Stone Mtn etc.. - 2007/12/09 18:44 Hi Pat,

I wondered if you would jump on board for this one!? It was great to chat with you the other day. I remember the "All Night Skates", too. I won many a free coke playing "Paddle Tag". And, the Rock n Roll Contests! Seems we were there every time the doors were open! I remember when you and Kim were first going steady. WOW, what great times we had!!!!

What about "96 Tears"?

I LOVED skating! When I was about 10 I had those metal skates that clipped on to the bottom of my shoes, and I practically lived in them, scabby knees and all. Later, at the rink, well, doing those turns as fast I as I could, that was the best fun. And the music, sure, the music was key.

Re:Plantation Skating/Skate Along/ Stone Mtn etc.. - 2007/12/09 18:55 The music back then was the best! "All Right Now" by Paul Rogers is still my favorite song. I remember winning the 15 yrs and under contest in the finals skating to Steve Miller's Rock'n Me! I loved my Chicago Wheels!!!!

Re:Plantation Skating/Skate Along/ Stone Mtn etc.. - 2008/01/24 16:09 Risking my legendary status as a rocker , here are my top 10 skating rink songs (mid 70s?). These aren't necessarily my favorite songs from the time, but each evokes a skating memory:

>Love Hurts - Nazareth
>Fox on the Run - The Sweet
>Never Been Any Reason - Head East
>Sky High - Jigsaw
>Saturday Night - The Bay City Rollers
>Best of My Love - The Eagles
>Jungle Love - Steve Miller Band
>Lorelei - Styx
>The Locomotion - Grand Funk Railroad
>Rock Me Gently - Andy Kim

What song did they play for the Alabama?
Let me ’splain. No. There is too much. Let me sum up.
