High School Dances - 2008/01/08 10:41
The anticipation, the music, the range of emotions - and that was just getting ready to go! I loved going to dances in the gym. I loved the spectacle, I loved the anonymous pursuit of the opposite sex (following her around, never being able to summon the courage to even talk to her, let alone ask her to dance), I loved hanging out with my friends while awaiting our "making an entrance" moment. The bands, the bleachers (ah, the bleachers), the whole thing. And I HATED when those lights came on. What do you remember?
Let me ’splain. No. There is too much. Let me sum up.

Following around members of the oppostite sex?
Hey, I thought it was us girls who did that!
My WORST memory was dancing and sitting down with a boy to talk and being amazed and (secretly thrilled) when he put his arm around me.
Imagine my surprise when he suddenly grabbed my butt! I smacked him good and that was the end of that.
About that time I heard howling laughter coming from about 12 feet away and turned to see Brenda and Doug Morrison clutching their sides. Apparently, it was DOUG who had grabbed my butt...

High School Dance?? What the heck is that?? No wonder I never post anything here. I don't have anything in common with you folks except that I went to Shamrock High School.

...Dances? All the student Senators had to make a boatload of BROWNIES to sell along with coke in wax covered paper cups. Talking my sister and her boyfriend into chperoning because having my parents come would be totally uncool!
Going to U-STORE-ITs to listen to potentail bands and decide who gave the most bang for the buck
Decorating the gym
Going to a real nice spainish restaurant with David Hobart and accidently walking into the men's room!
Good times!

Re:High School Dances - 2008/01/08 22:05
I never went to a regular dance with a date....only Homecoming and the Prom were date worthy! My friends and I used to all go together and watch everybody "couple up" while we secretly hoped that at least one of the cute guys we were crushing on would maybe, just maybe, ask us to dance.
I guess one of my best dance memories is that I got my first "real" kiss at a dance in the SHS gym. Tenth grade! Wooohooo! (Not telling who it was!)
My worst memory is of when the guy I was crushing on asked me if I was going to be at the dance because he was hoping to spend time with me that night. When I got there, he was kissing on some other girl.....sigh! Oh well!!
Chris, a funny memory I have of one dance was when your friend Rodney was bummed out by being snubbed by a particular girl. He and I sat on the bleachers and talked for a couple of hours. By the end of the dance, he was laughing and a bit cheered up. What makes that particular memory FUNNY is that at the end of the school year, Rodney signed my yearbook by thanking me for "that special night together on the bleachers at the dance." A lot of people (including my parents) raised their eyebrows about THAT comment! I was soooooooooooooo embarrassed! Oh lawdy, I was such a DORK!

Re:High School Dances - 2008/01/09 00:29
I thought it was just us girls who walked around watching the cute guys knowing we had no chance in heck of them even knowing who we were.
I remember my 10th grade year, for some reason we had the dance in the cafeteria instead of the gym. I rode to the dance with our neighbor Tommy Fendley. I thought that was so cool that my mom let me get in the car with a senior! I am sure had it been anyone else, Mom would have definately said NO WAY but since our family and the Fendley's were all good friends, she saw no harm.
Especially since Tommy and I use to act like we hated each other in the earlier years and wound up being very good friends. (and that I had a secret crush on him at the time) What was funny is on the way home, I found out that he was watching out for me by the questions asked about this guy and that guy that I talked to at the dance. Mind you that I said talked to...I very rarely remember dancing at any of the dances!
I remember a few years later, 2 or 3 years after I graduated, Tommy then living in Florida, came home for the holidays and even though we had moved, he came to my Mom's and got me and we went to a bar on Memorial Drive to watch a football game. We definately were not in the "crowd" and very behind on drinking! We went to the store got a 12 pack and went back to Mom's and took over the TV, drank our beer and she sat there with us eating Pizza. We wound up talking about all the dances and other events at SHS!

Re:High School Dances - 2008/01/09 02:13
Okay, girls, gotta confess, the only dance and annual pic i ever particpated in was the 8th grade. My date was Peter Bedsole (a real gentleman)!
I did the dress, (Yuck!!) AND, the hair! It was never me. I make no apoligize's for it. After that, I could have cared less about making an impression on anyone. Not because I didn't want to be a princess, but, mostly, because, IT JUST WAS'NT ME!!!!!
However, I have a daughter that is a big kick in the ass! Excuse my French. But, she hit every dance at South Gwinnett, and graduated when she was 17! Started Valdosta State Univ the Fall of her senior year. And she has worked her ASS off every single semester since and, made the "Dean's List" if you doubt it, check it out!!!!!! Valdosta State Univ. and after the first two years she was there, was a transfer to "Clayton State University where her first degree is: Administrative Management, and HER Associates in Paralegal Studies.
She currently works at Arnold, Golden, & Gregory, 17th ST., Suite 1700............. SHE is the Lead Leasing Paralegal....... She has a secretary that is 43 yrs old and she signs off on her vacay request. Dani is responsible for ""Carol's" Annual reviews. And, all the stuff management is there to catch while everyone else is having fun and living their life.!!!!!!!!!!
Guess What? Come May 2008, Baby girl is done. No more 30 hrs. wrking for the man!!!! Three more classes, three eff'ing days a eff'ing week!!!!!!! May 10th, 200000000000008! Baby Girl is done!!!!!
I have NOT met a college kid yet that has worked as hard as my DANI ! There is no drive in my drive, like the drive in my baby girls drive.......Yeah!!!!!! It's a long road, got stay in time with.............just moving along with ......

Well, of course the guys were doing it too! How else could we all have been circling about, eyeballing each other...remember when holding hands was a really big deal? Hormones! The best and worst part of being a teenager...
I can't help but think that what went on at high school dances was a lot like what I see going on in my yard on a sunny spring afternoon! You know, birds, bees, flowers, trees...
I have several dances documented in my 8th grade diary...who I danced with...who didn't dance...who I wanted to dance with, but didn't...lots of ups and downs...and allllll sooooo important!
And I was no prom girl...(Marshall was no prom boy)...so I never did the hair/dress/photo thing. Looking back, I kind of wish life had been different, and I could have done that, at least once.
And the bleachers sound interesting! The only dance I recall attending in the gym was the one where I sat on stage with the guys in the band. Kinda cool (mostly boring!). Although that might have been the only dance I ever had a date for... In the cafeteria, we just sort of stood awkwardly around (wallflowers, I think they're called!). The dark part was great. And if you got nervous standing around, you could always line up at the bathroom mirrors...
My favorite part of dances was slow-dancing...(because I really wasn't much good at the rest!). Well, I confess the body contact was a rush...
And yes, the anticipation was as much a thrill as the actually happening...
(Oh Susie...!)

LOL Gail you are right I was no prom boy! I was more interested in the bands and hanging out at the Dobbs House than getting a tux...Sorry bout that..but then I don't think your army field jacket would have gone well with a prom dress and a corsage!

And the boots! All I ever wore was boots! They'd have looked kind weird with the long pastel dress.
But that didn't stop a girl from hanging out in the back of the 5-7-9 shop, just looking.

Re:High School Dances - 2008/01/09 19:12
The only time I attended a Shamrock dance was after graduation as a chaperone for little sister Julie. I don't remember if we stayed or just made an appearance. There were a couple of times my intention was to go to a dance at SHS but I never made it to the door. I'll leave it at that.....
