Re:High School Dances - 2008/01/09 20:52
I was wandering around in the 80's today. That's where this was generated, BTW! Seems Briiiillo is pulling us out of the 70s here... Anyway, I read this great post that apparently just got blown by. So Lyle, here it is again!
Mistakes @ Shamrock - 2007/10/15 16:59 I don't know if anyone else will remember this or not, but I recall going to a dance at Shamrock about a year AFTER I graduated that was pretty memorable. I'm pretty sure it was spring of '81, possible the "Spring Senior Dance". I recall it had a Hawaiian theme - everyone had on the colorful shirts and leis...
The reason I was there was that I knew the band. I still don't know who the jokesters on the band selection committee were, but they hired a band from Tucker called the Mistakes. I knew some of the guys in the Mistakes from Brockett Elementary and had been to a few of their parties. And the ironic thing, especially considering the party theme, is that they were a loud, fast, rather rude PUNK rock band, mixing up covers of Ramones, Sex Pistols, and Iggy Pop songs with their own inspired originals, including such classics as "Celebreakdown", "Get Your Brain Drained", "Autopsy", and my personal favorite - "Daddy Bought Boys".
Needless to say, the Mistakes did not go over too well with the current student population, which led to a lot of back-and-forth verbal abuse between the kids and the band, as well as quite a few easily-understood hand gestures. I can't remember which song caused the plug to finally get pulled - it was either the Mistakes original "Virgin Bride" or their cover of Iggy's "C--k In My Pocket". Either way, it was great subversive fun, and an unusual moment in ShamROCK history.
Oh, and thanks to Mr. Phillips, who let a few of us "ex-students" in the door that night with no more than a raised eyebrow... Lyle Woodruff Class of 1980
Can't say I ever went to a dance where the band got testy with the crowd...great story Lyle!
Lisa -- you bad girl you! Glad you lived to tell us that one! ...the things our parents didn't know...
