Re:High School Dances - 2008/01/09 20:52 I was wandering around in the 80's today. That's where this was generated, BTW! Seems Briiiillo is pulling us out of the 70s here... Anyway, I read this great post that apparently just got blown by. So Lyle, here it is again!

Mistakes @ Shamrock - 2007/10/15 16:59
I don't know if anyone else will remember this or not, but I recall going to a dance at Shamrock about a year AFTER I graduated that was pretty memorable. I'm pretty sure it was spring of '81, possible the "Spring Senior Dance". I recall it had a Hawaiian theme - everyone had on the colorful shirts and leis...

The reason I was there was that I knew the band. I still don't know who the jokesters on the band selection committee were, but they hired a band from Tucker called the Mistakes. I knew some of the guys in the Mistakes from Brockett Elementary and had been to a few of their parties. And the ironic thing, especially considering the party theme, is that they were a loud, fast, rather rude PUNK rock band, mixing up covers of Ramones, Sex Pistols, and Iggy Pop songs with their own inspired originals, including such classics as "Celebreakdown", "Get Your Brain Drained", "Autopsy", and my personal favorite - "Daddy Bought Boys".

Needless to say, the Mistakes did not go over too well with the current student population, which led to a lot of back-and-forth verbal abuse between the kids and the band, as well as quite a few easily-understood hand gestures. I can't remember which song caused the plug to finally get pulled - it was either the Mistakes original "Virgin Bride" or their cover of Iggy's "C--k In My Pocket". Either way, it was great subversive fun, and an unusual moment in ShamROCK history.

Oh, and thanks to Mr. Phillips, who let a few of us "ex-students" in the door that night with no more than a raised eyebrow...

Can't say I ever went to a dance where the band got testy with the crowd...great story Lyle!

Lisa -- you bad girl you! Glad you lived to tell us that one! ...the things our parents didn't know...

Re:High School Dances - 2009/04/28 14:38 I remember having to take your shoes off, before going inside the gym to dance. Then you'd have to find them among the sea of shoes on the way out.

Gossip the next school day about who got busted, in trouble, and/or hooked up at the dance.

I really didn't care as much about the dancing as being there for the social aspects of the pre and post dance partying.

Re:High School Dances - 2009/04/28 22:56 I went to a few Shamrock dances. One of which was a Sadie Hawkins dance. Lots of Zepplin was played back then. My very first slow dance ever was with Bob Bradford.

I also went to a Victory Dance. I have a green streamer off of the goalpost at the game before the dance, part of a blue and white Dixie Cup from the dance and a book of matches with only two matches left from the dance too! I have a couple of signs that were taped just outside the doors to the cafet. One has "In Only" on it and the other "Out Only". They were handmade by dragons on white paper using black markers. They both have been stamped with small arrows pointing every which way as well as with small hands with the index fingers pointing in all directions. My first dance was with Doug Mason. I liked a guy named Tom Jones (no not that one) but he didn't show. All our dances were held the
"cafetorium". What a drag but still fun. The gym wasnt finished until June 70.
I went to more dances than I thought. I've written about this one here before but would have to look hard for it. It was a "Senior Dance" and my ticket # was 022650 (no I don't have the ticket)! When you came in you got a shamrock stamped on your hand using black ink. I danced with Billy Lord first and 5 dances with Roy Webster (or was it Ray?). Actually only 4 1/2 because Roy left me out on the dancefloor. He had to chase after his friend to go smoke. My last dance that night was with Chuck Pennington. He was fun and always smiling and laughing.
Great memories.

Re:High School Dances - 2009/04/29 01:36 Laurie, his name was Roy Webster. He was a friend of my oldest brother, Ronnie Martin (Clarkston '69). I remember being a little girl (maybe 6 or 7) and seeing Ronnie and Roy leaving the house for some high school function and thinking they were sooooo cool!

I can't believe all of the stuff you held onto for all of these years! I still have my pom poms, megaphone and one cheerleading outfit, but they are packed away in a box somewhere! Not sure I could find them if I was paid to! The only stuff I have within reach are my yearbooks and my graduation tassle which my Mama saved in a glass dome for me.

Re:High School Dances - 2009/04/29 11:49 Brillo? Did someone mention Brillo? My unique late 70's - early 80's hair just rolled over in its grave. From out of the mists of time I sensed a post that mentioned Brillo and here it is?

I LOVED school dances. What an excuse to live on the edge! Let's go get hammered, then arrive late, then hang around with our group, let's not dance at all until there's a slow dance (hopefully 'Stairway to Heaven'), let's "get with" someone and then let's try to stagger home to live to tell the tale and do it all over again. And let's hope no one throws up in the car or, worse yet, in the gym!! Ah the good old days, when it was "acceptable" to pour a big 16 ounce can of Busch beer (yes, Busch - I know, I know) over ice (Ice? What the hell?) and drink it like it was a glass of water, which it nearly was. And oh, there was the Evan Williams episode. And the time I broke my nose diving into an open car window. Man, those were great times. What a great movie that would make.
Let me ’splain. No. There is too much. Let me sum up.
