FIRST CARS - 2008/03/02 02:26 Hey Dragons! Let's talk about the first car you ever drove! There was some cool ones like the Road Runner!
I remember that someone had a purple one! But I dont know if they went to the Shamrock. Of course there was the great Camaro. I didn't get my first car until '72. It was a Chevy GoldDuster! HaHa It was a wheat color with a reptile skin roof. How funny is that?

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR?

Re:FIRST CARS - 2008/03/02 02:57 Oh lawdy! That hideous kelly green 1976 Dodge Dart "Special Edition!" I think I speak for myself and my brother, "Brain," when I say: "Accccccccccccccck!"

The house rule was never return the car with no gas in it, so one night when "Brain" and I had been out somewhere we stopped to put gas in it. He thought I had money. I thought HE had money. OOOOOPS! Neither one of us had money.

We did manage to find 61¢ worth of pennies and nickles down in the seats! Hey, back then it ALMOST bought a gallon! And.... we didn't leave it empty!!!

Re:FIRST CARS - 2008/03/02 10:16 Mine was a red Dodge Charger, vintage 1968, and it got all of 8 mpg. My ego was challenged only by the difficulty of keeping gas in the tank!

Re:FIRST CARS - 2008/03/02 10:36 I'll answer two current forum topix in one here. My first job was at Western Sizzlin Steak House on North Decatur Rd.. After working and saving for a year I finally had enough moolah to buy a decent used car. I bought a 69 Mach 1 Mustang with a 351. It was black with those big white racing stripes, hood pins and the cool scoop on the hood. I drove the Mach for almost exactly a year until someone made a left in front of me one morning when I was en route to Clarkston Adult. Man, I sure wish I still had that car. Tommy Jacobs reminded me of this at the Greek Fest..

Re:FIRST CARS - 2008/03/02 11:14 Mine was a 1972 Chevelle!!! Cream color, two door. She was a squeeler! I remember taking off at red lights and peeling the tires by accident. I was pulled over one late afternoon in Pearidege across from the Hess station. The officer said that a resident in the neighborhood behind the highschool had gotten my tag number and called it in because a guy in a ballcap was doing donuts in the culdesac? Lonnie Bates, Lee Bates, and Lisa New were in the car with me. I just glared at Lonnie!!!? But, later we figured out that it was Steve Nicholson who I had given my keys to that afternoon after lunch to get my car. I drove a few of us to O.E.C.! Anyway, I kept my keys close at hand after that one. No one drove her but me!!!!!

I also had a Mach 1 for about four weeks. She was a beaut. Green Metallic, with bucket seats. The transmission starting slipping really bad a couple days immediately after mom and I picked it up. It went back to the dealership after Clark Howard made a quick call to the owner!!! Shoot!!! I was hoping that Mom and I would get to be on the news.

That was the most fun to drive car I have ever had in my life, Tommy. If I win the lottery I'm gonna buy another one. You are remembering James Phillips, the hard ass manager of that place. He was there the whole 2+ years that I worked there. I did not have too much trouble with him. I was determined to hang on to that job, as I knew it was my one and only ticket to get a car. So, I guess my suffering through James paid off in the end. Johnny Walker was still working there when Mike Cook turned me on to a job there. I found out later that James was paying his employees 20 bucks to find other sucker's, er, uh, I mean people to work at that place. I started as a dish washer for 1.60 an hour. I actually liked the fact that James would let me work as many hours as I wanted. I only worked mornings and afternoons on the weekends though. Saturday and Sunday were my party days. Those were the days. James did come close to firing me once though. He caught me and another fellow smoking some herb out back. Of course it was rabbit tobacco!

Hey Rick, lets build a time machine and go back to the 70's and have a drag race behind North Dekalb Mall.

Re:FIRST CARS - 2008/03/02 20:18 Any memories go streaking by, Lishy?
My very first car was a seafoam green Corona that i bought from Tina Dalgren. I think I had it less than a week before I totaled it by crashing into a telephone pole in Lindmoor Woods.
Man, that was a good car too!

Hey Byron, I like the idea. Do you have any idea where we can get some kinda' blueprint for that time machine? If it works, I might want to use it for more than racing, though. There are a lot of things I would do differently, and plenty of other things I'd just like to relive the way they were!

Of course, if some of the folks that were a part of those "things I'd just like to relive" were also to go back but do it differently, we might have a conundrum on our hands! Hmmmm...

But enough of that. Don't let me take us away from the subject of this string, our FIRST CARS.

Do any of you oldtimers out there remember the debut of the VW Super Beetle? I think it was early in 1971 when Leonard Ledbetter got his, which was orange and might have been the first one at SHS.

Re:FIRST CARS - 2008/03/03 16:21 First car I ever drove was Ryan's 69 Firebird convertible. Dark blue with white leather interior. Lord, I loved that car. I still tell him it's the reason I started dating him.

Re:FIRST CARS - 2008/03/03 16:34 My first car was my '69 Barracuda fastback with a 318 V8 engine, automatic transmission. It was a metallic forest green with black racing stripes down each side. Worked for most of 7 years until I got rear-ended twice in a 6 month period. The rear end was about to drop out when I traded it (how STUPID was that!?) for a 1980 Mustang. <sigh>

I've had dreams about that car.

Re:FIRST CARS - 2008/03/03 16:40 Hey Mark, That was the same engine I had in my '68 Dodge Charger. What kind of gas mileage did you get out of yours???
