Benefit for Marshall Downing- '71 - 2008/04/24 11:34 Marshall has been battling colon cancer for several years now. His good friend, David Ridarick, and the guys from the old Riggs band are reuniting for a benefit performance for Marshall. See details below in copy of e-mail from Dave:

Greetings Friends! No... you are not seeing things. RIGGS is coming to Atlanta to celebrate the life of our awesome friend MARSHALL DOWNING!!! And we want YOU to be a part of this event.

RIGGS rocked Atlanta in the early 80's with our first release on the Heavy Metal Movie Soundtrack. Followed up with a solo album and a couple more tunes in the movie Night Shift, a national tour with Rush, and opening shows for too many bands to list here... RIGGS had the most fun playing for our friends in Atlanta. We are back for one night... Jerry Riggs, Jeremy Graf, Steven Roy Carlisle, and Dave Ridarick (me.. haha). We are here to celebrate with our best friend Marshall. He is battling with his health and this benefit is for him.
He worked as a guitar manager with Riggs and not only has been a great friend to all of us, he has been my best friend for over 40 years! If you can't see a man's character... look at his friends! Marshall makes me look great!

This event is going to take place at Smith's Olde Bar in Midtown near Ansley Mall. It is on Sunday, May 11th (I know... Mother's Day) and the doors open at 7:00 PM with music starting at 8:00. There will be a
$15 entry and all money goes to Marshall for medical expenses. After a couple of RIGGS sets, we are working on getting a jam together with a load of special guests and players. Due to the smaller size of the venue, I would highly recommend that you get there right when the doors open. We have not played together for 25 years and a lot of people will crawl out of the woodwork for this.

This is an awesome chance to show Marshall some love! He has some pretty big medical bills above and beyond his insurance. If anyone is interested in making a donation above and beyond the cover, you can do it there, or there is a donation account set up with Wachovia Bank... any one of them will do. It is called the Marshall Downing Fund, but it is under my name (David Ridarick). You can even deposit to the account direct ACCT # 1010201931734.

Ready or Not...Take it Off...Radar Rider... Depending on Love... Heartbeat...Christine... Give all you Got...Back in the UK... Born a Rocker.... lots more....

I don't think this will happen again....

Dave Ridarick

I can't agree more with what Dave said. Marshall is one of the best people I know and he needs our support now. So if you know Marshall and want to help, if you love the Riggs band and want to hear them again, or if you just want to get out of the house for a good cause, please join me and the other Shamrockers at this worthwhile event!!!!

I would advise going to the Smith's Olde Bar website
http://www.smithsoldebar.com/home.html and buying a ticket in advance as this is sure to sell out. Hope to see you there!!

Re:Benefit for Marshall Downing- '71 - 2008/04/25 15:16 Well, I'm having a hard time with this particular event...definitely some mixed feelings...sort of hard to know how to respond...

I sure plan to be there, along with Hank and Roxanne (just as soon as we figure out how to get those tix!)...

And I just want to say that if there's a better way for Dave to say "I love ya man!" I don't know what it could be. Music has always been one of (the?) most important thing(s) in Marshall's life, and Riggs WAS his life for a while.

I, for one, am glad he's been a part in my life.

Re:Benefit for Marshall Downing- '71 - 2008/04/25 21:45 Thanks for all the kind words and I do hope as many of you that can will make it to the riggs reunion. When I was at Shamrock I was lucky enough to make friends with some very good musicians like Ric Toney and Dave and Hoddy Ridarick and Marty Huie. I set a goal to work with a band signed to a National recording contract. Many garage bands and working my butt off doing everything and anything I found myself working with Dave Ridarick in a band called Raggety Anne. Man we kicked ass and opened for Rush at the Fox and we were on our way. The singer Don Train however had a chance to move back home to Philly to start installing antenas on this new concept called cellular phones and now many millions of dollars later i think Don was on to something! Meanwhile the rest of the band now led by one of the best guitar player/singer there is ever was Jerry Riggs moved forward and with the help of people like Irv Azoff and Roy Thomas Baker we signed with Full Moon Warner Bros records and with songs on the movie Heavy Metal and Night Shift my dreams and goals were met. The music business is a mean spirited business though and before long it lost the fun side. It was the getting there that was the most fun and I was ready to marry settle down do the suburbs thing. Now 25 years later my band mates hearing I am losing my battle with Cancer are coming from all over the country to play a show for ME! Just amazing! I still can't believe on May 11th the band I lived and breathed for is playing one last time!!! Amazing... Excuse the rambling but damn it is Amazing! Marshall

Re:Benefit for Marshall Downing- '71 - 2008/04/26 12:24 Marshall, you're a man with many friends (and as far as I know, no enemies)...I hope everyone you ever wanted to see again can make it to the Riggs Reunion next month...

And it's just amazing -- Hank ordered tickets online yesterday afternoon, and they were in our mailbox before noon today! Aren't modern electronics incredible? Sure beats those long lines we (ya'll!) used to stand in!

Re:Benefit for Marshall Downing- '71 - 2008/04/27 01:58 MARSHALL, You have touched many people in your life! So many of them you don't even know. Through all your efforts and hard work with the bands you have made long-lasting friends. Your life has been the bands, lights, music, excitement and the crowds. The way you feel just before the stage lights come on (and after) is part of you. The music touched the crowds and you know they wont forget those nights. The excitement of it all from the planning, to rehersal, from the first note til the last song has been the joy in your life.
Some people like me that went to Shamrock when you were there didnt know you. But now, all these years later I've gotten a chance to connect with you here a few times and was lucky enough to be on dragonchat with you once or twice. The connection is Shamrock and some of your friends and fellow-dragons are ones I have known. You are a part of the Shamrock family. The essence of you is felt here through the words you have written on this site and the words your close friends have written about you. We do care about our dragon brother. That will be one fantastic show for you Marshall! The excitement has already begun!

Re:Benefit for Marshall Downing- '71 - 2008/04/28 07:21 Wanted to bring this post back to the top. I am glad so many of you plan to come out and support Marshall. We are all very excited about being able to hear the Riggs band again. My bother, Kevin (class of '76) & his wife are coming all the way from St. Louis for the event. Marshall, I know you are amazed this is going to happen but just wait until May 11. We all all gonna show you some love!!

Re:Benefit for Marshall Downing- '71 - 2008/04/28 14:56 I second that motion. Let's gather on May 11 at Smith's Olde Bar for a real blowout in honor of Marshall. Tickets are easy to buy online, as suggested by Karen--

He is the best guy on the planet and everybody should be there on the 11th to rejoice in all that he is!

My best friend ever!

See ya'll there!
