Teacher Stories - 2008/04/25 10:03 This is a good teacher story, mostly. I had a remarkable teacher in both Algebra and Algebra & Trig named Linda Ayers. Many of you may remember her and also may have had her for math classes, although I'm not sure how much longer she was at Shamrock after 1970, when I graduated.

Ms. Ayers was a brilliant teacher, in fact one of the best I ever had, but you did not want to get on her bad side. If you were talking, whispering, etc. during one of her lectures, God help you

But you would learn because she was extremely effective at presenting and illustrating the material, and her
tests were straight from what she taught and covered in class.
She was also easy on the eyes, although again, her occasional flashes of temper and irritation could make you see her differently.
Anyway, that's my teacher story.

I think about Coach Holland. Sometimes he showed a little mean streak... If a girl left a pocketbook sitting beside her desk, he would walk up and kick it like a football to the back wall. He had issues with me the day he read my paper on Zero Population Growth. He gave me an A, but he said he just didn't think it was right.... I think he had issues with the part about castration for all prisoners... I can still see his face... He was without words and I don't think he could even say Go Tennesee!

I'm not algebra-oriented; more English and art. Back in those days I couldn't accept something I could not see. 889 - 77 x 81=___- 3 + 45 = M squared. What in the hay is that? I transferred out of that class and into a math. I figured (!) I'd glady give my seat to someone who really wanted the class. I got moved to Ms. Atkinson's class. Now, I had fun in there. Two very funny guys were always cutting up! One of them was named Roy but don't remember his last name. I wish I had a Clarkston yearbook for that year.

Re:Teacher Stories - 2008/04/25 19:16 Laurie it is so funny that you mention this. I have just now been reading up on Pythagoras and his core beliefs. Did you know he was 4 square against beans? He just would not tolerate them. Anyhoo-Pythagoras anf his homes were way big on gnomons (Squares constructed of pebbles or dots...but NOT beans)and meant to represent certain numbers. Like say the number 16 would look like this,

Pretty cool huh? using the gnomons, they figured out the square root = the number of dots on the bottom is the square root. Math contiues to amaze me!

"gnomons", "anywhoos" is that Greek and/or French? And "4 Squares" is that a that a take-off of a famous game show? And did you start a grocery list? I mean "core" beliefs and "beans"? You'd better give that list to Ellen! I can't find you on dragonchat so ...

After thinking about this incident... There are several things that come to mind... I will never forget the look on his face. He was always nicer to me after that paper.... and I do not recall him ever kicking anymore girls pocketbooks during that particular class. I am now wondering about the "A"... I don't think that he even wrote any comments in the side lines... I wonder what ever happened to him?
