ShamrockReunions.com is a VERY Good Thing - 2007/08/20 14:08
Thank you, Bob Griggs.
There's been a lot of musing on this site ABOUT this site .. in posts, private messages, and the like .. about why it's become so popular among those who frequent the halls of this online SHS. Some think it's just old acquaintances being renewed .. some see it as a desperate attempt by many to recapture their youth .. and all would agree (I think) that .. in most cases .. what is remembered are the best of times. The worst of times (hopefully) have been forgotten .. and, as we've heard .. time heals all wounds. (Well ... most wounds.)
I think it's a combination of all those elements. I'm curious everyday to see who's 'new' that might have been a friend. I can't wait to see what those who're VERY active have said most recently .. and how their memories jog my aging mind into thoughts of yesteryear. And I enjoy pontificating (who doesn't?) about those things that are of importance to me.
Whatever the reasons ... if response and number of online hits are the measure of success for this sort of venture ... ShamrockReunions.com is a success. By any accounting method.
So thanks, Bob ... Mary Andrews Elliot ... old friends and new ... you've brightened my mornings and given me a reason to log in at night.
(Now if I can just get my Asteroids scores up to my college playing days and give BobG76 a run for his money ...)

I like this site because it brings back so many good memories of when i was a young pup. Now that i am 53 i find myself reminiscing often about those simpler times. I really appreciate the folks who set this up and also the folks who have been posting.
I really hope it continues to grow.

I agree. I have had so many thoughts about those years since reading the site. I havent thought about High School in years. It is fun to see everyone responding and talking about things I remember like the music, cars, teachers and specific stories.

This post I have to reply to. I don't reply to many but this one is a must for me.
Thank you, Bob for making this site possible. Thank you, Nelson for your superior words we can all use. This site has done a lot to keep me interested. There are not many sites I look at everyday on a constant basis.
I have not talked to anyone from Shamrock (except my siblings) since 1999 at our 20th reunion. I had 2 very close friends the whole time I was in high school and one moved away while we were in 9th grade. To tell you the truth, I hated high school!! Hated everything about it, but we all have go. Hated it so much I took 4 English classes in the first quarter of my Senior year just so I could graduate early and be out of there by the Thanksgiving holidays.
In my opinion, this site has changed all that. I feel like this is a 'mini reunion' we have everyday to share our stories, chat a bit, and possibly hope someone we have known in the past becomes a member. I have more friends from Shamrock now (thanks to this site) than I ever did while attending it.
In addition to thanking Bob, I want to thank all of you for making my days brighter and being so entertaining. To me personally, this is a heck of a lot better than any high school day could ever be.
Thank you all for 'connecting' once again.

Thank you Bob Griggs for setting this up!!!
Thank you Mary Andrews Elliott for being the persistent planner and organizer that you are!!
I agree with all that has been said about the forum. The best part of this Shamrock Forum is the ability for us to catch up via online chats and profiles and allow us to enjoy the reunion to its fullest by rekindling the old friendships by getting to know all you once again. Our time on November 3rd will be even more special with all of the postings, musings and vulnerability. We wont have to spend our time with the niceties, but can engage each other in a way that friends do - we can move past the superficial and get on to enjoying each other for who they are and what they have brought to our reunion.
I, personally, have lost touch with so many from high school that I have forgotten faces and names - this site has jogged the memory banks and allowed me to connect back to the high school days again.
Thanks not only to Bob but to each one of you for being a part of this community. Thank you for sharing your personal stories and photos, but most of all sharing yourself with us all.
It’s the memories and the stories and the events of our life that have made us who we are. And if I had to look back I have some regrets, but I can’t say I would change anything about my life and my decisions. Because all of my decisions both good and bad have made me who I am today.
I am looking forward to the reunion - the time to plan – the time to prepare - But most importantly the time we will spend connecting to people that surrounded us in our formative years. (OK maybe somewhat de-formative too - no name calling :-])
I hope you all can make the weekend trip out - no matter what it takes. If you need some help please let someone know.
This reunion wont be the same if you are not there ...

THAT is what makes any and all of this worth something. We all had moments we could have done without (heck, sometimes even at the hands of those we're encountering NOW) ..
But this is, quite frankly, a good place. The kind of place Shamrock was for many in the past .. and the kind of SHS that it should have been for everyone all along. I'd like to think most of us wanted to be like this back then .. we were just too young and immature at times to know .. well .. all that we know now. Feels really, really good to be a part of something that warms the heart .. yours .. mine .. ours.
(I know, I know ... next thing you know, the choir director guy's going to suggest we all stand in a circle, hold hands and sing 'Kum Ba Yah' ... )
N
PS Or the Hokey Pokey.
PPS (scary thought .. what if the Hokey Pokey really *IS* what it's all about?? ... )

Amen, Nelson! Thanks for putting it so eloquently.
Thanks, Bob - I know this is a huge undertaking. Thank you for spending your time so we can reconnect. It is very meaningful to talk to so many old friends and acquaintances, and to discover that many of us have much in common
I have always loved going to reunions, but this one will be the best ever. Thanks, Mary, for putting it together!
After I get home from work, this is the first site I check. Thanks, everyone, for making this so much fun!

Just as Bonny said, I pretty much hated High School also while attending. Don't get me wrong, I had many friends and made alot of memories. But I did not take it as seriously as I should have. Even though I do not know many of the members on shamrockreunions.com, we all have something in common with each other; We all attended Shamrock High, had many of the same teachers, same experiences, etc. I can relate to most every story posted on this site. We all have a little green in our blood and I'd say that makes us family. I look foward to our SHS Family Reunion and want to thank Mary for all the time you have put into the planning of it. And Bob, like everyone else, I especially thank you for all the many hours you have invested into the creation of this site! It has allowed us all to reconnect on-line, and to say the least, has been incredibly entertaining!
Thanks, Ken Moore ('79)

Re:ShamrockReunions.com is a VERY Good Thing - 2007/08/20 20:36
I enjoy this site, but I still feel much like the outsider, or outcast I was in high school. I was never popular, and sometimes I wanted to be, but my friends weren't, so we were busy not being popular together.
Unfortunately, now, my high school friends are all long gone, to places far and wide and mostly unknown. Through various sites online, I've run into a couple of people, but when it gets to the point we're suggesting meeting up for coffee, I chicken out. I know we're too different now. High school is way in the past, and I honestly didn't keep up with anyone.
I have memories, most definitely, and I can think of a few people I'd really love to see, but they won't be joining this site, and they won't go to reunions - oddly, the people I would most want to see would probably want nothing to do with anything remotely reminding them of Shamrock.
So why do I like it here, why do I keep logging in? People like Nelson making this a good time.
Thanks to you, and to the efforts of everyone to make this a place to share all of our mixed memories. We were all there together, and people who have lived through shared experiences always seem to benefit in one way or another, obvious or not, from reuniting.

Re:ShamrockReunions.com is a VERY Good Thing - 2007/08/20 20:51
Well, unlike my sister, Bonny, said, I loved being at Shamrock! Many, many thanks to Bob & Mary for working so hard on this project. I have been to all of our class reunions & thoroughly enjoyed them all. You Class of '77 were so GREAT to invite us to the one in 2002. That one was by far the most fun of them all. Getting to see & visit with "the kids" from the other grades & say hello to the teachers that were there was so special.
As everyone who can do math knows, it's our grade's 50th birthday year! Back in December, I learned that our next door neighbor on Vine Circle (Philip Jones) near McLendon Elementary had suddenly passed away to a heart attack. Then, in January, I lost a girlfriend that I had worked with at Republic Airlines to cancer. Philip was 49 & Sylvia was 48. In their honor, I have been on a reconnecting/reuniting kick ever since. It has been 30+ years since I've seen some of the folks I've seen recently. It has been a fun year searching for & visiting with each one. This reunion is the "icing on my birthday cake"! The site has allowed us to get reacquainted in a really fun environment. It makes plain 'ole email just boring! I, too, check out this site everyday anxiously awaiting the next "new member"(addiction victim). I am doing my best to "spread the word" among my classmates. I know my sister is happy I gave her "the word"...haha!
Again, I really appreciate those who have made this all possible. I had always been envious that my daughters were able to keep up with everybody they knew on their facebook/myspace pages. Now we have that option too with our old classmates. But, if only we could just get them all to be a little more computer literate & post those pictures & bios!!!

Gsmith, None of us are the same people we were in high school. I bet if we took a poll most of us have done a 180.
The party girls and guys, are probably busy Moms and Dads with too many soccer games and Scout meetings. The studious types probably have a wild side we would never suspect.
But this is like meeting all new friends , who you feel like you have known forever.
Heck, if it makes you feel any better, my fiends laced my OJ with acid one morning, and I carried around A ROCK! ,for 3 days, convinced it was talking. Now , try to top that for embarrassing moments best left behind.

I also love this site. My daughter said, "Cool mom. It's like My Space for Old Farts." Ouch! Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

Gabrielle (that's gotta be one of the prettiest names of all time .. )
It's so cool. Do you realize the distance you traveled in one comment? From 'feel(ing) like the outsider, or outcast' .. to here, and now .. a place where we all seem to realize that, while at Shamrock, we were 'all there together'.
That spoke to me as much as anything else. That's the essence of why this is so special (to me, at least.) There were so many guys I looked up to .. so many girls I thought were pretty and sweet .. but no matter who anybody 'was' back then .. we ALL had moments where we didn't feel like we fit in .. or where we felt we came up short.
But now .. I see and hear from all the people I remember SOOOOO well! .. and every single one of them brings me a smile. The cool ones? .. I remember being in awe of them .. (and now, they talk to me!) .. the smart ones? .. I remember hanging with them .. and wishing I could make the grades they did ..
And the ones (like you .. like me) that often felt disconnected? .. (like we all did at one time or another) .. well .. let's just say I'm glad I've been given another chance to know how much they have to offer me .. offer US! ..
Because we're all pretty cool .. and pretty unique .. and pretty pretty (or handsome) ...
... and .. just plain special.
(Stuart Smalley .. eat your heart out .. )
