Coach attacks student with wall speaker... almost - 2007/08/20 17:57
In my senior year, I was on the newspaper staff and an office aide for several class periods. When the paper came out, we were usually allowed to promo it during the afternoon announcements. Because I was an aide during the last period, it was usually my honor to hype the paper (although now I can't even remember its name... was it "The Excalibur"?).
One afternoon, everyone was finishing up final exams. The office staff waited a few minutes later than usual to begin the announcements, to give test-takers a chance to finish up.
By this time of the year, I had grown tired of the usual "plain vanilla" announcements, so I started putting the paper promo to music. At first, I would do a voice-over to background music. This time, I had the entire commercial pre-recorded. My background was a Chicago song that began with a very intense drum solo (the title of which I have also forgotten).
Mrs. Rogers or somebody did the announcements, then called me to the microphone. I cranked up the cassette player and the music began. As it did, one of the counselors from the back offices reached over my shoulder and turned up the volume (they couldn't hear the voice messages).
The drums echoed through the hallways. I can remember turning to look toward the door, thinking, "Gee, that seems awful loud." Mrs. Rogers slowly walked out of her office as that same counselor came running back to the front to turn the volume back down.
The promo lasted 20 to 30 seconds. After it was done, I packed up my player and walked out the door, meeting Varsity Basketball Coach Bob Holland in the doorway. He was obviously upset about something...
... and he had the intercom loudspeaker from his room in his hand.
I learned later that, when the drum solo blasted through the classrooms, Coach Holland's class was done with its final and were sitting quietly. Holland was sitting at his desk, but quickly rose to snatch the wooden speaker box off of the wall. He left the classroom without a word, headed for the front office.
I understand that (my now favorite school administrator) Mrs. Rogers refused to reveal my identity.
